Islam, the Religion of love and tolerance

I have just looked at a picture on the Web, of the bodies of young girls who had been beheaded in the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi. In October of 2005, four Christian high school girls were attacked with machetes and three were beheaded. In that part of the world, conflicts between Christians and Muslims are common. Indonesian Muslims murdered the girls. Apparently the killings were carried out as revenge killings. But the killings were also carried out as Ramadan trophies. Beheading the Christians qualified as an act of Muslim charity. The plot was contrived after the perpetrators had been in contact with Philippine Jihadists. What kind of mad men carry out beheadings as acts of Muslim charity or for Ramadan trophies?

Meanwhile, about the same time in Europe, Muslims began rioting over the Danish Caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. And in Great Britain, Burger King had withdrawn an ice cream product, because the swirl design on the lid looked like the word “Allah” in Arabic. Also there has been an on going ban on pigs in Great Britain, toy pigs, calendars of cutely little pigs or a tissue box displaying Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. Earlier in 2003, a Nursery School in Batley, West Yorkshire, banned stories pertaining to pigs. And finally, earlier this year, the story of the three little pigs was cause for concern in Great Britain’s Muslim community.

So with the recent murder plot (February, 2008) of one of the Danish cartoonists who was involved with the 2005 caricatures of Muhammad, all one has to do, is remember what happened in 2005, to three high school girls in Indonesia. Last year, a British teacher in Sudan was threatened with death by protesters and corporal punishment (flogging) by the government. The crime, the naming of a teddy bear “Muhammad”.

Sharia law has been introduced in Sudan; the drinking of alcohol is not allowed and women are required to cover their heads. Convicted criminals can face corporal punishment (flogging) or even death.

So here we are in early 2008 with people using religion to justify killing their fellow human beings, not in the heat of war or defense of their country, but because they have been offended or it is their duty because of Sharia law. Many religions have had their dark side, a time in history when they were involved in intimidation, persecution and murder. But today, the only religion on a global scale that fits that description is Islam.
