Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football

Two days ago I wrote about and showed pictures from our touring of the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Yesterday, Harvey and I spent the day away from the Notre Dame campus to tour other attractions in South Bend . Wednesday was a very eclectic day. If you have ever seen the film Rudy, then you know that it’s about a kid who wills his way onto the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team against incredible odds. Rudy is a 1993 film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All American in 1940. Well we have just finished our road trip to our hotel in Mishawaka, Indiana. It took just under 8 hours but with the catching up that Harvey and I did the drive did not seem to take that long at all. On October 18, 1924, two games and two nicknames were brought to the forefront of college football. It was on this day that the grand opening game of the new Memorial Stadium at Illinois University had taken place between the Fighting Illini and Michigan Wolverines. Also, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Army Black Knights clashed in New York at the Polo Grounds, too. On February 5, 1990, a landmark event in television sports history had taken place. It was on this day that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish agreed to a deal with NBC to air five home games during the 1991 season. The five-year deal allowed Notre Dame to become the first American college in history to sell football games to a national television network. Then-President of NBC Universal Sports Ken Schanzer negotiated the deal with Notre Dame Athletic Director Dick Rosenthal.
