Two days ago I wrote about and showed pictures from our touring of the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Yesterday, Harvey and I spent the day away from the Notre Dame campus to tour other attractions in South Bend . Wednesday was a very eclectic day. We started by going back to the University for a few specific items. First I wanted to go back to the Grotto to light a candle and say a personal prayer. It agree with those who say that visiting the Grotto is a unique experience that is very hard to put into words. Here is a ... Read Full Story

If you have ever seen the film Rudy, then you know that it’s about a kid who wills his way onto the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team against incredible odds. Rudy is a 1993 film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All American in 1940. In 2005 Rudy was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 ... Read Full Story

Well we have just finished our road trip to our hotel in Mishawaka, Indiana. It took just under 8 hours but with the catching up that Harvey and I did the drive did not seem to take that long at all. Here is a slide show with selected pictures of our travel. We went from Toronto to Sarnia and then across through Michigan, down to Indiana and then across to Mishawaka. Once we checked in around 5 pm or so, we headed to the University of Notre Dame campus for a very, very quick walkabout and a few picture taking opportunities in the fading ... Read Full Story

On October 18, 1924, two games and two nicknames were brought to the forefront of college football. It was on this day that the grand opening game of the new Memorial Stadium at Illinois University had taken place between the Fighting Illini and Michigan Wolverines. Also, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Army Black Knights clashed in New York at the Polo Grounds, too. Michigan(2-0) @ Illinois(2-0) This was thought at the time to be a mismatch because Michigan had dominated opponents for the last two years at that point. But the Fighting Illini had a star that could combat the strong defense of ... Read Full Story

On February 5, 1990, a landmark event in television sports history had taken place. It was on this day that the Notre Dame Fighting Irish agreed to a deal with NBC to air five home games during the 1991 season. The five-year deal allowed Notre Dame to become the first American college in history to sell football games to a national television network. Then-President of NBC Universal Sports Ken Schanzer negotiated the deal with Notre Dame Athletic Director Dick Rosenthal. The two sides agreed to two more five-year deals which stabilized the partnership between them. In June 2008, the two sides agreed to an ... Read Full Story

Sorry, Charlie. The logic went that as long as Notre Dame didn't go down in flames and wound up winning nine or 10 regular season games, one of the major bowls would pick the Fighting Irish, who have so many fans nationwide that they pack stadiums in the postseason. But Notre Dame did crash and burn, and now Weis' firing seems imminent.

Days after reportedly being punched in the face during an altercation, Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen attended practice with his face mostly covered by a black visor. As the AP notes, allowing a dark visor marked a departure from head coach Charlie Weis' previous visor policy: Weis announced in August that he would allow Notre Dame players to wear visors for the first time. He said at the time that they could only wear clear visors because he...

For all those who say that there are no such thing as zombies, I submit Charlie Weis and the Notre Dame coaching staff. Even the embattled coach himself seems resigned to the fact that his dismissal is imminent, saying at his weekly postmortem address that he would agree with a coaching change. When you are the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame, you have to believe that you are the best man in the world for the job. The...

The writing is most certainly on the wall in South Bend. Charlie Weis' head coaching experiment is all but over at the University of Notre Dame. Weis has already acknowledged his inevitable departure by stating that his record isn't "good enough" at the moment to be the Notre Dame head football coach. If you needed a more definitive reason why Weis won't be in Notre Dame next year, the school's Athletic Director will not allow him to go on his...
