I was still reeling from New York City’s swift ban of trans fat when the high fructose corn syrup debate ignited and tore through the shelves of one of my favorite local grocers , vaporizing all traces of high fructose corn syrup. For a kid who grew up in the 80’s, this is like wiping out an entire food group. It made me queasy. Just what poison is this high fructose corn syrup? Why are we only now trying to get rid of it after it’s been around for over 30 years? If you’ve already settled this sugary mess for yourself and would rather ... Read Full Story

It’s vital that the bariatric patient keep an eye on sugar grams in food! About 97% of all bariatric surgery patients learn to become very familiar with what is known as the “dumping syndrome”, which is a way the body tells you that you ate something that you really shouldn’t have eaten. “Dumping” shows up in many forms from sudden fatigue, to nausea, to vomiting, and even diarrhea. When the “dumping” comes, take note of what you most recently ate, and do your best to avoid it again. Many things can cause dumping. Foods containing too much grease, fats, carbs, and sugars CAN make ... Read Full Story

High Fructose Corn Syrup is made from cornstarch, and is a combination of fructose and sucrose. It is sweeter and cheaper than sugar and extends the shelf life of products. For these reasons, it has become a popular ingredient in many sodas, fruit-flavored drinks and other processed foods. High fructose consumption contributes to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. It raises blood levels of cholesterol and another type of fat, triglyceride. It makes blood cells more prone to clotting, and it may also accelerate the aging process. The body is not supposed to be consuming it. Adolescents aged 12-18 have the highest intake, with sugar-sweetened ... Read Full Story

TUCSON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists say they've discovered heat forms a potentially harmful substance in high-fructose corn syrup often fed to honey bees. The study led by Blaise LeBlanc and Gillian Eggleston of the USDA's Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Tucson showed heat can produce a potentially toxic substance, hydroxymethylfurfural, which might kill honeybees and endanger human health. High-fructose corn syrup is fed to honey bees to increase reproduction and honey production, but it's also used as a sweetener in some soft drinks and various other human foods, the researchers said. LeBlanc and Eggleston said that when exposed ... Read Full Story

By Colette Bouchez There is perhaps nothing more re freshing after a workout class or day in the park than a icy glass of soda or fruit juice. And, in fact, if you are trying to avoid artificial sweeteners then you might be tempted to switch to beverages and foods sweetened with “the real thing” , which of course is sugar. While in some instances this might be a good idea, when it comes to your good health there are some important precautions to heed. Indeed, there are a number of good studies showing that consuming large amounts of sugar – be it in ... Read Full Story

Health Canada is considering allowing food companies to fortify junk food with vitamins and minerals. Is this idea going to improve or worsen the health of Canadians? When I first heard about this concept a couple of months ago, I thought it was a joke. How can anyone at Health Canada seriously think that fortifying junk food with vitamins is going to improve anyone’s health? Or under the premise of health promotion, is the Canadian government actually bowing to the demands of the food industry? Certainly companies that are suddenly given permission to put health claims on their potato chips, cookies or chocolate bars ... Read Full Story
