This wikizine is all about old catalogs!...All kinds of old catalogs in every category!

Department store catalogs, car parts catalogs, boating catalogs, clothing catalogs, novelty and magic catalogs...The list is endless!

We're going to focus, mainly, on catalogs issued before 1980...

.Find an area that you like, maybe it's fishing lures or old guns and start collecting old catalogs too!

Anything you can contribute by way of photos or info (like sources for old catalogs, articles on old catalogs, your personal experiences, etc) will be greatly appreciated!

OLD Catalog Scans!...1921 Wards MidWinterSale Catalog & a 1960 Crooked Gambling Supplies Catalog!...

From the 1921 Montgomery Ward MidWinter Sale Catalog

Hello!...

Forrest Flanders here again for OLD CATALOGS.

I’ve been busy for the past week with catalog scans.

II’ve just uploaded a scan of a 1960 Crooked Gambling Supply Kccard1960cover House catalog (the K.C. Card Co. of Chicago) to Flickr…It’s a scan of the entire 77 page catalog…I think you’ll find it fascinating!...You can access it at this URL: http://flickr.com/photos/oldcatalogs/sets/

The 2nd item is a “camera scan” of the 1921 Wards MidWinter Sale Book…

But, first, a word of explanation…

Why do I do “camera scans”?

The main reason I do them is that I don’t want to damage the original copy of an item.

in order to scan an item on a regular scanner you have to mutilate the original by taking it apart at the binding (spine) so as to create single flat pages…

I get around this by camera scanning items…Sure, some copy is, sometimes, lost in the center or “gutter area”, but it still allows for a reasonably good reproduction, plus there are added benefits.

One of these benefits is that you can get some of the ambience of reading the catalog live (in a virtual way) when you view close-up camera shots of a catalog as opposed to the somewhat clinical viewing provided by scanner shots…While some of these camera shots aren’t always perfect, they are, for the most part, acceptable.…By the way, related to this idea, there is a new web site based on this concept , still in Beta, that allows you the actual virtual experience of reading a classic book live on your screen complete with flipping pages…I’m sorry, but for the moment their name escapes me.

Back to the 1921 Wards MidWinter Sale catalog…

While scanning this catalog I came across some really interesting things, but the highlight of this catalog has got to be an INCREDIBLE item that appears on page 59 of the catalog!:

The GASOLINE IRON!!

REMARKABLE!

In any event, you can access my camera scan of the 1921 Wards Winter sale catalog at this URL:

While you’re checking out the catalog, take a look at page 91…Did you know that Wards sold Government Surplus!?...It’s on this page(91) including a regulation General McClellan Army Saddle!

That’s it for this this post, but stay tuned as I’m busy scanning more catalogs including an interesting novelty catalog…
