Old CatalogScan!...Scarce 1935 Johnson Smith Co. Supplemental Catalog Issue!
Hello everybody!...
This week I “camera scanned“ a 1935 Johnson Smith & Co. Supplemental Catalog…This was their last year in the Racine, Wisconsin location…It’s written like a newsletter with “Vol.1 No.9” appearing on the front cover together with the date “Feb., 1935”… .,..The catalog runs 48 full-sized pages measuring 7 ½” X 10” !...That’s about double the size of their regular catalog issues (which normally measure approx. 5” X 8”).
I originally wrote this catalog up in a detailed post on February 8, 2008 (you can access this post through the URL listed below)…it’s one of my favorite Johnson Smith Co. catalog issues!...for many reasons!!...
...So, be sure to read my detailed review of this catalog on my 2-08-2008 at this URL:
http://forrestflanderscentral.typepad.com/old_catalogs/2008/02/one-of-my-most.html
What do I mean by “…many reasons”?
Well…one of the nicest things about this catalog is the size of the ads…It’s really unusual to see a full-page ad for the Joy Buzzer, especially an 8 X 10 page ad!...Then there’s a full-page ad for the Johnson Smith Pea-Matic Revolver Gun…a really unusual thing…Many other standard Johnson Smith items like the Whoopee Cushion also appear in larger ads…And, there’s a nice full-page ad for their regular 1935 catalog…Take a look for yourself at the scan.
Another interesting part about this catalog issue are the little “editorial articles” that are interspersed throughout the catalog.
There’s an article about chameleons followed by an ad selling them…Then an article on Horned Toads followed by an ad selling them for 25 cents…Then there’s an article carrying the story that a Police car was “bombed”, but the “bombing” later turned out to be a prank…It was a Johnson Smith Auto Scare Bomb…The ad for this novelty appears on the same page…What a great creative promotional technique this is!...There are more of these little articles throughout including one about how the “Joy Buzzer” novelty was used in an MGM movie film!
To access my “camera scan” of the complete 48 page catalog, just go to this URL:
