The canoeing competition at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics will be held from August 11 to August 23 at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in Beijing.

Olympic Gold Medalist Dies


Gyorgy Kolonics, a 36-year-old, two-time Olympic gold medalists from Hungary died Tuesday, after collapsing in his canoe.

The canoeing gold medalist lost consciousness and collapsed Tuesday while training for the Beijing Olympics. Paramedics were unable to revive him. As of now, the cause of death is presumed to be heart failure.

Kolonics won Olympic gold in the 1996 Atlanta Games in the 500-meter singles and at the 2000 Sydney games in the same event. He received a bronze metal in Atlanta in the 1,000-meter doubles race and in the same event in 2004 in Athens.

In the Tuesday training session, Kolonics was training for the upcoming games, which would've have been his fifth.
