The modern pentathlon competition at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics will be held on August 21 and 22 at the Olympic Sports Stadium (running, equestrian), Ying Tung Natatorium (swimming) and the Olympic Green Convention Center (fencing, shooting).
The modern pentathlon is competed in by both men and women at the Olympic games. It is a sport created for the summer olympic games, and first contested in 1912. It is meant to simulate the experience of a 19th century cavalry soldier behind enemy lines (ie: riding an unfamiliar horse, fighting with a pistol and sword, swimming and running). A set of medals is awarded in the women's and men's modern pentathlon. A country may enter up to two athletes in each the women's and men's categories. An individual athlete competes in the five events, hence making up the modern pentathlon.Events
