The volleyball competition at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics will take place from August 9 to August 24. Indoor volleyball events will be held at the Capital Indoor Stadium and Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium. Beach Volleyball competitions will be held at the Beach Volleyball Ground at Chaoyang Park.


The volleyball competition at the Olympics is competed in by both men and women, in the indoor and beach volleyball events. A National Olympic Committe may enter one men's and one women's qualified team in the indoord competition, and two men and two women's qualified teams in the beach volleyball tournament.

Twelve men's and 12 women's teams will compete in the indoor volleyball tournament, and 24 men's and 24 women's will compete in the beach volleyball tournament.

Indoor
The competition has two phases, the first is the qualification round, where teams are ranked by the FIVB World Rankings, then divided into two pools of six teams, with the host nation ranked first. In this round, each team plays one match against all other teams inits pool, top four teams in each pool advance, the remaining two, are out of the competition.

The second phase or the final round, teams play quarterfinals, semifinals and finals. Matches are organized according to the results obtained in the qualification round. Winners of quarterfinals play each other in the semifinals, then the winners of semifans play for gold and silver, while the losers play for bronze.

Beach
Teams are divided into six pools of four teams each. The top 16 teams after pool play go on to a single-elimination tournament, witha  play-off for third place.

Kerri Walsh dominates the beach volleyball court. Her and partner Misty May have proven to be unstoppable, and Walsh is currently ranked as the best female volleyball player in the world. Walsh grew up in Saratoga, Calif., where she played varsity volleyball at Archbishop Mitty High School. She went on to Stanford University, where she won national titles in 1996 and 1997 and was a four-year first-team All-American, Freshman of the year, Final Four MVP in 1996 and co-National Player of the year in 1999.
