The discussions and rumor mills are in gear. Who should the Mets sign in this subpar free-agent class? Outfielder Matt Holliday and pitcher Ray Halladay appear to be the players Mets fans covet. Maybe they should look beyond these two. First, let’s shelve Halladay, unless the Mets are willing to send newly minted No. 1 prospect (Baseball America) Jenrry Mejia, No. 4 Ike Davis, a player off the 25-man roster, lefty Jon Niese and loads of cash to Toronto. If Mets GM Omar Minaya wants Halladay, wait until he is a free-agent after the 2010 season. As far as Holliday is concerned, the 29-year-old ... Read Full Story

During the summer I was talking to a league source that believed one of Omar Minaya’s biggest failures was that he ignored some of the good baseball people in the Mets organization. One of those people was Sandy Johnson who originally was brought in to mentor Minaya in 2004. I was told that Johnson had become increasingly frustrated the last couple of seasons because of his inability to connect with Minaya on various issues. When I heard about Johnson’s possibly retirement I feared the organization would lose one of the few good baseball people left . That is why I was pleased to read ... Read Full Story

Omar Minaya's Mets go into spring training with a new look bullpen and Oliver Perez back in the rotation. The Mets also wanted to upgrade at 2B and possibly at catcher, but both never got done. It appears that both will be solved internally, instead of outside the organization.    Orlando Hudson still appears pretty much available and he has said that he would love to play for either one of the New York Teams. The problem remains that Luis Castillo is still on the roster and can't be moved so easily. The Mets never had any real takers for the oft-injured second basemen, ... Read Full Story

This offseason has certainly proved to be a busy one for Mets GM, Omar Minaya. Following the 2008 season, Minaya was faced with multiple tasks. The first was rebuilding the troubled bullpen from the ground up. He did so by acquiring both J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez. Next, he was faced with the task of filling  two spots in the starting rotation, which became open after both Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez filed for free agency. Omar once again was able to patch up the rotation nicely by re-signing Oliver Perez and signing a bevy of pitchers, such as Freddy Garcia and Tim Redding ... Read Full Story

I mentioned a Ken Davidoff column earlier when talking about the Yankees potential postseason roster. There was a small blurb at the end of the piece regarding the Mets and the recent firings of some Omar Minaya staffers. The Mets will fire Ramon Pena in the front office (scroll down, on Buster Olney’s blog), and that’s good news for Mets fans. More by force than by choice, Omar Minaya has now jettisoned two of his most controversial hires, Pena and Tony Bernazard. Neither was good at his job, and neither had any respect whatsoever throughout the game. Minaya desperately needs to run a tighter ... Read Full Story

The Mets top priority this season isn't left field or starting pitching, it is, to bring change to the team.  The Mets need to bring in a number of new faces to bring the team a new attitude.  I am totally against the team getting rid of the core, but I am in favor of them getting rid of some of their older aging players.  One of those is Luis Castillo, I am a big fan of Castillo and the way he plays the game of baseball, but I think it is...

In a weekend report for the New York Post, Joel Sherman wrote the following about Mets GM Omar Minaya: “Rival executives and agents described a man not fully in charge of baseball operations regardless of what Mets ownership says.  One NL official said that lag time between discussing business with Minaya and the time it took [...]

On Halloween I went to a party as Ben Baumer. Nobody noticed. But maybe it is too late for that. As fielding stats get more widely accepted, it seems a glorified Moneyball scenario, where a few teams with superior objective analysis carry an edge, is becoming less likely. As more players, are signing long-term deals with the teams that drafted them, and fewer are hitting free agency, the statistical analysis the Mets have been so neglectful...
