Omar Minaya

I'm a member of the "new school," that typically looks hard at sabermetrics as a form of player evaluation and takes issue with those inside the game who don't. Dayton Moore and Ed Wade are the two easiest targets in baseball front offices for sabermetric scorn, but the Mets' Omar Minaya is pretty close. Then again, nobody likes Minaya these days; at least, I don't think many Mets fans do (as an A's fan, I wouldn't know). Heck, I just blasted...

I can’t believe Madden is still ticked off for losing that La Prensa paper route back in ‘28. The “Omar Minaya only pursues Latino players” topic has appeared again this offseason and the propagators of this myth are out in full force. The Mets planned to make an offer to catcher Bengie Molina's agents before departing the winter meetings. Still, that agreement was not expected to come before GM Omar Minaya leaves at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Omar Minaya met with Cubs GM counterpart Jim Henry on Day 1 of the winter meetings, as Chicago continued to show interest in acquiring second baseman Luis Castillo. Still, Minaya suggested the Mets' trade opportunities are complex and could require three or four teams.  

Didn’t Phil Pepe, Leonard Shecter and the boys do a version of this? Some are calling on the Mets to do whatever it takes to win now. It is even reasonable to think that it is in Omar Minaya’s best interest to do this. A difficult 2010 could spell the end of Minaya’s tenure in New York, and what a shame that would be—for Minaya to act in the best medium-term and long-term interest of the team at the expense of his job.
