San Francisco Giants shortstop Omar Vizquel and his vacuum glove will be out roughly 4-5 weeks after having arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to remove torn cartilage from his left knee. The 11-time Gold Glover, who will turn 41 in April, felt a pop when he was running Tuesday, and an MRI revealed the injury. With Omar rehabbing, Kevin Frandsen will become the starting shortstop this spring. Vizquel signed a $5.3 million, one-year deal for a fourth season in November, including a club option for a second season. He batted just .246 with four homers and 51 RBIs last season, but rocked up the middle as ... Read Full Story

Josh Q. Public: When you are with me, I’m free. I’m careless, I believe. Above all the others, we’ll fly. This brings tears to my eyes. My sacrifice. -Creed Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go. No time today. No time, tryin’ to get a watch repaired. No time, never got a thing to wear. Hear the ringing of the telephone, oh no. Hear it ringing in my head now. Nope. No time today. Wasn’t even gonna write today. But I saw this one stat and I just couldn’t resist today. I just couldn’t resist writing about Omar Vizquel today. I love this guy. ... Read Full Story

San Francisco Giants veteran Omar Vizquel set the big league record for most games played at shortstop after a doubleheader against the Florida Marlins Sunday. These things tend to happen with old people. Nevertheless, we are impressed with the 11-time Gold Glover's resilience and dedication. The second game of the twin bill marked game #2,584 for the 41-year-old Vizquel, surpassing Hall of Famer and fellow Venezuelan Luis Aparicio . Way to go, buddy! You can totally retire now. Eleven-time Gold Glove shortstop Omar Vizquel agreed to a $5.3 million, one-year deal with his San Francisco Giants Friday, including a club option that could bring his worth to $10.2 million over two seasons. He’s guaranteed $5 million next season, and the Giants have a $5.2 million option for 2009 with a $300,000 buyout. Slumping offensively, Vizquel batted just .246 this season, but played defense up the middle like a young buck, which is probably the reason he’s still able to get a contract at the age of 40. This post also appears on Crooked Pitch , where I will be guest-blogging Saturday afternoon. ... Read Full Story

From FoxSports. com "The Red Sox appear stuck with shortstop Julio Lugo, who is earning $9 million per season through 2010, but they inquired about the Astros' Mark Loretta in spring training, evidently viewing him as possible infield insurance. A trade for the Giants' Omar Vizquel might be something for the Sox to consider: Vizquel would offer steady and at times spectacular defense, and offense that would be no worse than Lugo's ..." Vizquel, 42, would give the White Sox a versatile backup for nearly all the infield positions. Last season, Vizquel played third base, second base and shortstop while batting .266 in 62 games for the Rangers. The White Sox said Friday that beside the five additions the club made to its 40-man roster, there would be no other news. In addition to the 11-time Gold Glove winner providing solid defense, Vizquel would also give the White Sox a...

Everyone knows that Omar Vizquel is one of the greatest defensive shortstops in the history of Major League Baseball. A FOX Sports article reported that Vizquel will not return to the Texas Rangers in 2010. He is seeking a similar utility-infielder role with another team. Coincidentally...
