As NYBD contributor Joe Demayo pointed out on twitter , it appears the Mets are about to bring in Henry Blanco although no deal has been made official. It did get me to thinking that signing Blanco could pave the way for Josh Thole to become the everyday catcher and eliminate for Bengie Molina. Anyone who questions Thole’s bat obviously wasn’t watching him in Binghamton (.816 OPS), his September call up in New York (.752 OPS), or his latest numbers from Venezuelan Winter Ball (1.059 OPS). The kid can hit and if he puts up an OPS between .750 and .800 that would put ... Read Full Story

I was thinking of some players on the Mets current roster that intrigue me for 2010. My criteria for these players are that they are inexpensive, yet could play a role with the big league ballclub. Josh Thole/Omir Santos – Thole is the most obvious name that comes to mind. It’s great that he is 4-9 in his first two games, but we all remember Daniel Murphy’s two months in 2008. I am all for giving him a shot to earn the starting catcher’s job provided there is a decent veteran backup. Omir Santos seems to do a good job behind the plate both ... Read Full Story

If there is a bright side to the remaining games in the Mets’ schedule, it is that they aren’t likely to be less entertaining than the August matchups. Between the return of David Wright, the scheduled comebacks of Carlos Beltran and John Maine, and the presence of Josh Thole, Tobi Stoner and Nick Evans, there are a multitude of reasons to tune in that simply didn’t exist a week ago-unless you were really excited to see Pat Misch start. In Wright and Beltran, the Mets can deploy a pair of stars to help make that trip through the New York lineup a little less ... Read Full Story

The Mets (23-19) defeated the Red Sox (25-18) for the second straight night, thanks to a dramatic ninth inning courtesy of Omir Santos. Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 4.31) pitched stellar, notching a season-high six strikeouts, but it was reliever Pedro Feliciano (1-1, 2.65) who was credited with the win after the late-inning heroics. Jonathon Papelbon (0-1, 1.80) was charged with his first loss and blown save of the season, as he surrendered two runs in the top of the ninth to blow a one-run lead. Mets Pitching Mike Pelfrey: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB Pedro Feliciano (W, 1-1): 1.0 IP, ... Read Full Story
Yesterday, Topps released its All-Star Rookie team for 2009 and while there were some justified selections and some questionable ones, the player that has the most intrigue for me is Mets C Omir Santos. He beat out phenom Matt Wieters, who most thought would be in contention to take home the Rookie of the Year award in the American League. Did Santos’ season really justify the award? First, let’s take a look at his statistics: 281 At-Bats .260...

“Great views of Flushing and the surrounding areas from the stadium- it faces west so you can see beautiful sunsets. Plus all around the stadium you get to see the chop shops and the train yards and the bay. You would think the Mets would try to visually temper these sights but surprisingly not.”  So [...]

Joe Janish of Mets Today gives a detailed review of Omir Santos, asking, while he is a good back-up, is he a ‘strong enough all-around to catch regularly for a championship club.’ Santos hit .261 in 74 games as a starting catcher, while batting .235 as a sub. “He has played extremely well for us for a [...]
