A community portal about Organic light-emitting diodes with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: An organic light-emitting diode is a special type of light-emitting diode in which the emissive layer comprises a thin-film of certain organic compounds. The emissive electroluminescent layer can include a polymeric substance that allows the deposition of very suitable organic compounds, for example, in rows and columns on a flat carrier by using a simple "printing" method to create a matrix of pixels which can emit different colored light. Such systems can be used in television screens, computer displays, portable system screens, advertising and information, and indication applications etc. OLEDs can also be used in light sources for general space illumination. OLEDs lend themselves for the implementation of large areal light-emitting elements. OLEDs typically emit less light per area than inorganic solid-state based LEDs which are usually designed for use as point light sources. Prior to standardization, OLED technology was also referred to as OEL or Organic Electro-Luminescence.
11/28/2009 Technical / Research Sim4tec has released a new version (v2.0) of their OLED simulation software, SimOLED. The software now comes with two modules for electrical and optical simulations of OLED key figures. SimOLED Electric can be used to calculate quantities like current density and current efficiency and to look at spatially resolved values of e.g. electric field and exciton densities. SimOLED Optic provides information about spectrally and angularly resolved emission, color coordinates and quantities related to power and external quantum efficiencies. Both modules now contain features for automatic parameter variation and a completely redesigned tool for graphical representation of data. More information over ...

The next generation in lighting technology clearly will be LEDs but the next but one is already in sight: Organic LEDs (OLEDs) offer even more design options than conventional LEDs. Now the German government is funding a research project aiming at developing manufacturing processes for large-area OLED illuminants.

ALZENAU, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Applied Materials, Inc., Merck KGaA and the Braunschweig University of Technology (TU-BS) today announced that they have been awarded a grant by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to develop processes to lower the cost of manufacturing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting for general illumination applications. Applied will spearhead the three-year project, named Light InLine...
The trend in lighting technology is towards the large-area and decorative illumination made possible by organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Analysts at NanoMarkets forecast a worldwide market volume of over $2.9 billion for 2012, with sales increasing to around $5.9 billion by 2014. The lighting industry is now looking for economic production techniques for organic lighting. In cooperation with Philips, the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser...
