Popmatters writes: "A look at the controversy surrounding Shadow Complex and Orson Scott Card. When Shadow Complex came out last week, it was met with an unusual controversy, which Christian Nutt explored in an article on Gamasutra. The controversy centered around some gamers’ decision to boycott Shadow Complex because of its connection to Orson Scott Card, an outspoken opponent of gay rights. Card wrote Empire, a novel about a leftist army taking over the capital, and Shadow Complex is a prequel to that story." Read Full Story

Okay, so if you missed the last one, this is part 2. This probably contains awful spoilers so if you care about that, bugger off. I mean if knowing the ending ruins the story, the story sucked. There should be so much more to any story than a plot, and knowing the plot should only enhance the interaction with the story. But anyway, I need to get done with ruining Empire so I'll just dive right in. Mr. Card, what's with the paragraph intro's to each chapter? I mean why bother? You just came off as a pretentious snob who thinks he knows something ... Read Full Story

Ugh, what a terrible book. What happened to you Mr. Card, where did you go, and when did a crazy neo-con steal your soul and your body? I used to love Orson Scott Card. Seriously, when I was a kid I read every single one of his published books, even saints (despite the fact that I hated and continue to dislike the Mormon church). His books were subversive and unique. Even when he stole subject matter from other authors, he used the ideas in a new way and talked about something meaningful (see the Worthing Saga were he stole the idea of cryogenic sleep). ... Ender in Exile Twenty-three years have passed since Orson Scott Card first dazzled readers with Ender's Game, a seminal work that blurred the lines between young adult and adult fiction. Now, he’s back with Ender in Exile which picks up where the 1985 winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards, science fiction’s highest honors, left off. The revival of Ender, the boy hero who saves Earth from bug-like aliens, goes beyond the novel’s pages with a new comic-book adaptation of the original saga and spurring interest in Hollywood as a potential film franchise. All of this quite surprises the 57-year-old North Carolina resident, although ... Read Full Story

Orson Scott Card has had some interesting opinions, to say the least. But we can probably all agree on the need more games like Civilization, which is a sentiment he shared with the Big Download. "I like the turn-based strategy game and there aren't very many of those made, and most of them are made badly," he said. "Really Sid Meier is the only guy who does it reliably...

Orson Scott Card is one of the giants of present-day fantastic literature. The Wikipedia article on him says that he is the only author to ever win both the Nebula and the Hugo Awards in the same year, two years in a row. I believe that I have read all but one of the books by Card that are set in the so-called Enderverse. There are, so far, four books in the Ender series, and four in the Shadow series, and, also several short stories. I wish...
