Orson Welles news, related photos and videos, and reviews of Orson Welles performances. According to Wikipedia: George Orson Welles was an American theater and film producer and director, and a theater, radio and film actor. Welles first gained notoriety for his October 30, 1938 radio broadcast of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Adapted to sound like a contemporary news broadcast, it panicked a large number of listeners. Welles and his biographers subsequently claimed he was exposing the gullibility of American audiences in the tense preamble to the Second World War. In the mid-Thirties his New York theater adaptations of a voodoo Macbeth and a contemporary Julius Caesar became legendary. Welles was also a practiced magician, starring in troop variety spectacles in the war years. During this period he became a serious political activist and commentator through journalism, radio and public appearances closely associated with Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1941, he co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in Citizen Kane, most often chosen in polls of film critics as one of the greatest films ever made.

To mark the re-release of Citizen Kane, the IFI Temple Bar is currently running a season of Orson Welles films. Today, at 2pm, his 1944 thriller The Lady from Shanghai, will be shown. A stylish film noir, the film is marred only by Welles' dodgy Irish accent (he plays an ex-IRA man) but graced by an enigmatic performance from his then-wife Rita Hayworth.

NEW YORK (AP) — No posters or photographs of Orson Welles hang in the living room of his eldest daughter, Chris Welles Feder. His memory is preserved, imperfectly, through a shelf of books that Feder says have yet to capture her father’s many-sided life.

In the early 1970s the New Yorker magazine's legendary, fearsome film critic Pauline Kael set the cat among the pigeons when she claimed that Herman Mankiewicz, and not Orson Welles, deserved most of the credit for Citizen Kane. Kael was never afraid to take on cinema's sacred cows, and her withering review of David Lean's 1970 Irish epic Ryan's Daughter helped drive him away from film-making for over a decade.

With our society's extensive use of the internet, viral marketing has become an invaluable tool for movie marketing. In recent years I think it's safe to say The Dark Knight is the reigning champion for best viral marketing campaign which inspired activity from people all over the world. However, the greatest publicity stunt ever achieved goes all the way back to 1938, when Orson Welles' radio broadcast of H.G. Wells novel War of the Worlds...

Orson Welles's ignominious decline has been well-documented, but he still fascinates and inspires like no other in film. Why? Because, he will never be bettered, writes David ThomsonYou can say he was a failure – but that only leads to a more demanding appreciation of success than numbers will ever satisfy (George Lucas, I read the other day, has a net worth of around $5bn). Orson Welles never directed a picture that made a profit in his...

If Orson Welles were alive today, he could still fool people into thinking a Martian invasion were happening, just like he did when he performed War of the Worlds on the radio in 1938. If not Orson Welles, at least Sacha Baron Cohen could make us believe that gay aliens had landed. Even with cable TV and the internet, people are still stupid, and they still haven't read H.G. Wells' 1898 sci-fi classic. Some things never change, right? This...

Freestyle has debuted the official US trailer for Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles on Yahoo. It's a huge improvement over the first promo trailer we ran back in August. This is really a tough sell - they're trying to get the High School Musical fans interested in a film about a stage play while also enticing Richard Linklater fans and admirers of Orson Welles. That's an eclectic group of moviegoers that this is being sold to, but either...

Orson had become so famous for his villainous role as Harry Lime in The Third Man that the moment he appeared in public, somebody whipped out an instrument and began playing the theme song. When an organ-grinder began playing the theme while Christopher and Orson were crossing Piccadilly Circus, Orson had had it with London. His driver took them way out in the country to picnic in an isolated spot surrounded by hedges. A man on a bicycle saw...
