Orson Welles news, related photos and videos, and reviews of Orson Welles performances. According to Wikipedia: George Orson Welles was an American theater and film producer and director, and a theater, radio and film actor. Welles first gained notoriety for his October 30, 1938 radio broadcast of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. Adapted to sound like a contemporary news broadcast, it panicked a large number of listeners. Welles and his biographers subsequently claimed he was exposing the gullibility of American audiences in the tense preamble to the Second World War. In the mid-Thirties his New York theater adaptations of a voodoo Macbeth and a contemporary Julius Caesar became legendary. Welles was also a practiced magician, starring in troop variety spectacles in the war years. During this period he became a serious political activist and commentator through journalism, radio and public appearances closely associated with Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1941, he co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in Citizen Kane, most often chosen in polls of film critics as one of the greatest films ever made.

"Who is the new Orson Welles?" someone asked me after a recent screening of Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles (64 screens). Certainly Christian McKay does a superb Welles in that movie, and if anyone wanted to have an Orson Welles-style narrator on a documentary, or a Moby Dick-style cameo in a feature film, McKay's your man. But what about Welles the director? Those are much bigger shoes to fill. Linklater is arguably one of the best...

See Me and Orson Welles at The Enzian this weekend.
If you love movies, you love Welles.
And if you love Welles, you’ll get a huge charge out of Christian McKay’s performance as young stage and radio dynamo Orson in the film.
One of my favorite Welles on-screen anecdotes is below. It has a lot of resonance [...]
For director Richard Linklater, his projects range from the artsy (Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly) to more mainstream (School of Rock, Bad News Bears.) However when the screenwriter visited DC he was here to present a more independent production. But indie doesn’t mean small, in making Me And Orson Welles, he traveled all the way [...]

Christian McKay didn’t like the comparison the first time he
heard it. The words “You look a bit like Orson Welles” could send any young
actor screaming back to his personal trainer.
“It was at RADA [the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art], and I was
incredibly upset,” the British actor recalls. “My generation remembers the
older Orson being interviewed on [...]
Me & Orson Welles, director Richard Linklater’s tautly focused valentine to the famous writer/actor/director, is a fine film that could be better, but is more or less blessed and cursed by the Orson factor.

Orson Welles wasn't just thwarted on the silver screen. His plans to shake up television with innovations that anticipated the YouTube era were foiled, tooWhen we think of Orson Welles and television, the impulse is often to smirk. The innumerable talk-show appearances, though reliably entertaining, couldn't help but seem sad in comparison to his earlier triumphs. And those ads for the likes of Findus frozen foods and Paul Masson wine were...
With just a single nod today for supporting-actor Christian McKay, you wouldn't know "Me & Orson Welles" was one of only two mainstream films to rate 100% approval from the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. this year. The other movie with a perfect score -- "Up" -- is among the 10 films in the best-picture race and also is contending for screenplay, score and animated feature at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards. As noted Oscarologist Wayman Wong...
