The Skinny This weekend, the Ottawa Senators traded disgruntled problem child, Dany Heatley along with a 5th round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and a 2nd round pick. The Contracts' Value in a Cap World First, let's look at the contracts. Heatley is signed, I believe for 5 more years at an annual hit of $7.5 million. Michalek is $3.5 million for 4 years and Cheechoo is $3 million for 2 years. Basically a wash, cap wise, EXCEPT that the if things don't pan out, the Sens are out of Cheech in 2 years and left ... ESPN is reporting that the 3-way between the Kings, Sharks and Sens is DONE!!! TO OTTAWA: Alex Frolov, Jarret Stoll TO SAN JOSE: Dany Heatley TO LOS ANGELES: Patrick Marleau My take on this will be posted as soon as it's confirmed by Sens management. Don't hold your breath though, Sens fans. This Shark story smells a little fishy to me. I'm kind of sad, however. I was hoping to watch the little princess squirm for a few weeks playing an exhibition game in front of a boo infested crowd while facing an uber-hostile Ottawa media. Aw well. You can't win them all. Maybe ... Read Full Story

The best resolution to the Dany Heatley saga would be to see the disgruntled left wing traded before the start of training camp on Sept. 12, captain Daniel Alfredsson said on Friday. That would allow the team to prepare for the 2009-10 without the distraction of having to take back a player who doesn’t want to be here. But whether that happens is a different question. “Obviously, it would be the best scenario for everyone,” said Alfredsson. “But if it was that easy, I think something would have already been done. “We’re ready for whatever happens and we’ll make something good out of it.” Read Full Story

In the aftermath of the ginormous Senators/Sharks trade, Andrew the SENSHobo and I asked each other what we thought of our now ex-players. I spoke rather glowingly of Jonathan Cheechoo and cautiously optimistic of Milan Michalek . What does a Senators fan think of Dany Heatley? Well, there’s a lot less vitriol than you’d think. Unfortunately for Sharks fans, the whole notion that Heatley doesn’t backcheck or hustle...well...this only adds more weight to that idea. And it’s probably the main reason why I’m not totally sold on this deal yet. Read Full Story

The grievance proceeding over Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk’s attempt to retrieve the US$4-million bonus paid to Dany Heatley on July 1 will continue for some time.Heatley demanded a trade in June, but the Senators were not able to swing a deal until September, leaving them on the hook for the bonus.“There’s nothing new,” Melnyk said. “There’s a backlog of arbitration hearings (at NHL offices), and we expect it to be no news for, maybe...

by Christopher BottaFiled under: Senators, SharksEverybody took their shots at Dany Heatley this summer -- brave commentators, agenda-filled NHL players and managers (anonymously, of course), wiseguy writers (guilty!).
