A New Ring

By Pemat23 on  From feastofmusic.com
I first encountered Wagner's four-opera epic The Ring of the Nibelung  in June 1990, when PBS broadcast the Met's  then-new Otto Schenk production on four consecutive nights (as Wagner had originally intended.) It was a seismic event in my musical life, exploding my feeble notions of opera as a showcase for shrill divas singing sentimental claptrap, usually in Italian. (I was a teenager at the time.) On the contrary, the Ring turned out to be a wondrous fusion of music, drama, scenic art and...Read Full Story

Schenk's Ring Cycle had profound impact

 From ap.org
When Valhalla burns and crumbles near midnight on May 9, Otto Schenk's production of Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera will be retired. Glenn Gould and Beethoven's Tempest Sonata

By rhystranter on  From rhystranter.blogspot.com
Only Gould ever played the Tempest Sonata really well and made it tolerable, no one else. Anyone else made it intolerable to me. It is, of course, very ponderous, the Tempest Sonata, Reger said, like a lot of Beethoven's work. Thomas Bernhard, Old Masters: A Comedy Translated by Ewald Osers Glenn Gould plays Beethoven's Tempest Sonata Ludwig van Beethoven, Sonata Op. 31 N.2 - I. Largo, Allegro Ludwig van Beethoven, Sonata Op. 31 N.2 - II. Adagio Ludwig van Beethoven, Sonata Op. 31 N.2 - III...Read Full Story
