Shireen Mazari: Tribute to a great Pakistani patriot

SILENCING THE VOICES OF DISSENT AND PATRIOTISM?

Pakistani hawk Shireen Mazari takes stock of US threats

Shireen MazariShireen Mazari is a hawk and written some hard hitting articles on the USA and on Mr. Zardari. The harbingers of democracy have tried to silence her voice. She was recently fired from her position in a Think Tank called Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) in Islamabad.

Who is running the show? Why is the US ambassador meeting every minister and dictating micro issues? WIll only Haqqani clones be allowed to flourish in the Pakistani establishment?

One of Pakistan’s most prolific writers and strategic thinkers was replaced by a more subservient civil servant– under pressure from the USA. Mr. Husain Haqqani, the Neocon Ambassador of Pakistan to the America may have been instrumental in first identifying and then getting Shireen Mazari removed from her position as Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies International, an Islamabad based think tank.

Ms. Rehman and Mr. Zardari should be asked the question in the question hour of the National Assembly. Why was Ms. Mazari fired? Why is the obsequious media quiet. Why don’t the proponents of “democracy” raise a voice? How can Pakistanis tolerate Mr. Haqqani and try to silence Ms. Mazari?

If a journalist or a thinker criticizes Mr. Zardari’s worst blunder of his political life–”forgetting Kashmir to the next generation”, she should not be fired for criticising the PPP on retreating from its historic stand.

Shireen Mazari quote

Shireen Mazari reminded Mr. Zardari on his mistaken staement on Kashmir. She is a hawk and a super-patriot. Shireen mazari uses her elequence to defend, not malign Pakistan–the mirror image of Mr. Husain Haqqani. The PPP should have fired Mr. Haqqani and replaced him with Ms. Mazari. One sees glimpses of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in Shireen Mazari. First it was Foreign secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan. Now it is Shireen Mazari. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was also fired from Ayub Khan’s cabinet because the US president of the time did not like him. It is sad to see that today, the same PPP is complaint to the wishes of Washington to such an extent that the smallest voice of dissent is silenced.

Shireen Mazari is a lone hawk among many doves in Islamabad. She has been writing about the external and internal threats to Pakistan. She seems surprised by the support to Anti-Pakistan elements by many outside Pakistan.

In this particular article she she mentions some but not all of the threats. She lists the Sindhi World Congress, but she does not mention others like the Baluchistan Liberation Army, and Goverment of Baluchistan which is now headquartered in a Non-Arab Middle Eastern country. In all probability the BLA and Jundallah are aimed at Iran, but Pakistan is also the target. Failure and defeat in Afghanistan. Payback for Pakistan. Shireen Mazari clearly resents the “Do More” mantra. Pakistani Cheese for Western “whine”. Invoices for services rendered. Many Americans have threatened Pakistan. Kissinger and other Americans threatened Pakistan. The lessons from past defeats have not been passed on to the new generation of US and UK policy makers. Python swallows alligator and explodes: Lessons from the Peloponnesian War. It is sad the even those who know Pakistan have chosen to be employed by the Indian machinery and are presenting the other point of view. On deconstructing the wrong paradigm of the USA media

Neocon Husain HaqqaniDo Mr. Haqqani and Mr. Zardari the great harbingers of “free speech” and “democracy” believe that by firing Ms. Mazari, they can stifle the voices of sanity? If they really believe so, they are worng, dead wrong. Perhaps they should read Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s “The myth of independence.” That book was published during the dictatorship of Field Marshall Ayub Khan.

The removal of stalwart and patriotic Pakistanis from positions of power will create a greater backlash against American interests in Pakistan.

ISSI DG Shireen Mazari removed

ISLAMABAD: The government on Wednesday removed Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) Director General Dr Shireen Mazari ahead of the end of her contract in August 2009.

According to sources, former foreign secretary Tanvir Ahmad Khan may replace her.

Talking to Daily Times, Khan said the government had offered him four positions including Dr Mazari’s post. He said if formally asked to run the ISSI he would make it a think tank. Dr Mazari likened her removal to the sacking of former Foreign secretary Riaz Muhammad Khan. She claimed the United States government had influenced her removal as she was writing hard-hitting articles highlighting US intervention in internal Pakistani affairs.
