A transcontinental country, its isthmus constitutes the southernmost part of a natural land bridge between the continents of North America and South America. It borders Costa Rica to the northwest, Colombia to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south.
Human Rights Court Finds Panama Guily in Heliodoro Portugal Case
Telemetro Reporta - The Panamanian State was condemned by the Inter American Court of Human Rights of the Organization of American States (OAS), headquartered in Costa Rica, for the forced disappearance of union leader Heliodoro Portugal. The Court determined Panama was guilty of having violated the Rights of Personal Freedom and Personal Integrity of Portugal and the judicial guarantees of his family, due to a delay in the application of justice. The court also indicated that the Panamanian State has not performed its duty in cases of forced disappearances. In the hearing for this case, held last January in the courthouse in San Jose, judges listened to testimony from Patria Portugal, the daughter of Heliodoro Portugal and from Panamanian Attorney General Ana Matilde Gomez.

El Estado panameño fue condenado por la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos de la OEA, con sede en Costa Rica, por la desparición forzada del dirigente sindical Heliodoro Portugal.
La Corte estableció que Panamá fue encontrada culpable por violar los Derechos a la libertad personal e integridad personal de Portugal y las garantías judiciales a su familia, debido al retraso en la aplicación de justicia.
También indicó que el Estado no cumplió con sus obligaciones en los casos de desapariciones forzadas.
En la audiencia por este caso, celebrada en enero pasado en la sede de la corte en San José, los jueces escucharon los testimonios de Patria Portugal, hija de Heliodoro Portugal y de la procuradora general de Panamá, Ana Matilde Gómez.
