Two giant pandas from China were welcomed to Australia on Saturday with gifts of bamboo and a city party before settling in to their new home, a 25-acre (10-hectare) natural enclosure at the Adelaide Zoo. China will send two giant pandas to an Australian zoo this Friday as part of a joint research program. Four-year-old male Wang Wang and 3-year-old female Fu Ni will be loaned to Australia for 10 years, according to Zhang Hemin, head of the Wolong Nature Reserve Administration, the official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday. The two pandas are heading to Adelaide Zoo. China's President Hu Jintao offered the pandas as a goodwill gesture during a 2007 visit to Australia. China has started construction on a research centre to help captive pandas adapt to the wild with a view to releasing them into nature, state media reported. The centre is being built in a mountainous area of the southwestern province of Sichuan, the official Xinhua news agency said, where an 8.0-magnitude earthquake left more than 87,000 people dead and missing in May 2008. It is expected to be completed within three to five years, at a cost 60 million yuan (8.8 million dollars), the report said.
