Three years ago our oldest son, Tristan, was diagnosed autism at the age of three. Since I have been working on a Vermont system of care for individuals with ASD and advocating in Vermont and in Washington D.C. for more funding and support for families and individuals with ASD. Through my work I have seen the lack of supports for people with ASD and their families have, so I have created a business, Parenting Autism, to step in and help. Parenting Autism produces DVDs and workbooks to help parents parent on the spectrum. In addition to our exercises and tips in our workbooks and DVDs, Parenting Autism gives all profits back to the autism community.
This is a good piece of research, which hopefully will lead to better treatment methods. However the danger is that in the focus on genes, people will be ecouraged to think that this is the only cause, when the truth is that there are many highways and byeways which lead to the destination of autism. Jenny McCarthy is telling US magazine about her struggle to find a cure for her son’s Autism. She tells the mag that she’s helped her son recover from the disorder, and claims that placing him on a strict wheat- and dairy-free diet freed him of the Autism symptoms he once had. Jenny says her faith in God helped her deal with her son’s condition, saying “I made a deal with God. I said, ‘You fix my boy, you show me the way and I’ll teach the world how I did it.’”
