Photo by melc24 I can root through my boxes of stored books and come upon one that was created for me. This book, covered with soft, squishy pleather, whose cover is graced by blue birds holding a banner, contains important details of my early years. I can find out, since I obviously won’t remember, when I took my first steps, what my first words were, and how many presents I got at my first birthday party. Somewhere around my second birthday, in likelihood due to their separation, my parents stopped updated that book. It’s as if my childhood ceased to exist on paper, kind ... Read Full Story

Does age six sound too young to begin paying a child allowance? I don't think so. Short of sounding like that annoying, my-kid-is-the-best parent, I know my kiddo is ready. How do I know? These are the factors I used to evaluate my daughter's readiness to receive an allowance: $ She brings home money-related worksheets from school (counting coins, etc). $ She has a base knowledge of simple addition and subtraction. $ She too often leaves out must-have toys that regularly meet their demise at the paws of two all-too-eager domestic tabby cats. $ She regularly expresses an interest in buying or paying for ... LOOK OUT, LADIES!! ) ..I’ve never posted an actual photo of myself. But… TODAY … Through my daughter’s artisan craftsmanship and unparalleled artistic abilities… I give you her sketch of: ME (click to enlarge…that’s what she said) Seriously? Fuck. I think I need to start breaking her ... Read Full Story

A big story in the States at the moment is the Heene family in Colorado, who claimed that their 6-year-old child was in a large mylar balloon that had become untethered. The balloon could be seen flying hundreds of feet in the sky, chased by military planes. When no child was discovered in the balloon, it was assumed he'd fallen out and a massive ground search ensued. Fortunately, the child was found hiding in an attic back at home, but the family is now under investigation for what turned out to be a complete hoax. Read Full Story

When my daughter’s good, she’s really good; when she’s being naughty, it’s all shades of frustrating, dangerous and well, loud. But more times than not, she casts off the terrible twos’ (or threes, if we’re being honest) antics for a much more responsible and respectful soul. When I saw this starting to happen, when she had developed enough psychologically that she stopped being me-centered and began to think of how her actions could affect change in the people around her, I started to encourage that. I’ve also always allowed her to help me in some way - children are notorious for wanting to help ... Read Full Story
