Pat Conroy

The South Carolina Arts Commission Board announced the 2010 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards for the Arts, the highest honor the state presents in the arts. Pat Conroy was honored for Lifetime Achievement. Awards will be presented May 6 at the Statehouse upon adjournment of the House of Representatives. The S.C. Arts Gala to celebrate the awards recipients will be held at 7 p.m. May 6 at the Columbia Museum of Art.

The Beaufort County Open Land Trust will host an evening lecture with Pat Conroy at 6 p.m. Saturday at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Performing Arts Center. There will be a cocktail reception after the lecture on "The Green" at King and Pinckney streets. Cost is $150 and includes an original essay by Conroy.  

Pat Conroy has been penning tales of the South Carolina Lowcountry for decades. Some say his books have put the Lowcountry on the map or that his eloquent descriptions of the area's beauty and charm are right on the money.
