After 15 seasons as a baseball coach at Arizona State University,
Pat Murphy has decided to resign, according to a news release sent out on November 20, 2009. The release gave no reason for the decision, and ASU said his cell phone was broken when reporters tried to reach him for comment. Hm.

According to
Sports Illustrated, athletic director Lisa Love said in a statement, "Coach Murphy has an outstanding record of success on the playing field. I thank him for 16 years of hard work and service to the university and the sport."
Murphy came to Arizona from Notre Dame in 1994. Under his tutelage, the Arizona Sun Devils made it to the College World Series four times, in 1998, 2005, 2007 and 2009. ASU's record was 629-284-1 while he was coaching the team. He also groomed a few major league players:
Andre Ethier (LA Dodgers) and
Dustin Pedroia (Boston Red Sox).
No word yet on who will be tapped to replace him as the ASU baseball coach.
