I wasn't really prepared to like The Middle. I had no expectations, really, because aside from knowing that it was Patricia Heaton's latest sitcom, there had been very little scuttlebutt about it. So, when I tuned in, I expected the typical Patty Heaton I had seen for years on Everybody Loves Raymond or the upscale version I'd watched on Back to You.
Well, what a surprise when I saw her on The Middle. This is a Patty I had never seen before...

- Patricia Heaton is an Unappreciated Mom in 'The Middle' (feedburner.com)
Patricia Heaton returns to the type of role that won her two Emmy Awards during the nine-year run of "Everybody Loves Raymond" -- a sassy suburban mom -- in the new ABC sitcom "The Middle." And TV reviewers are heaping loads of praise on her for this new twist on an old format. Two years ago, Heaton and time-slot mate Kelsey Grammer ("Hank") teamed up as battling exes in "Back to You." That Fox workplace comedy failed to find favor with either...

So I was jazzed to receive an advanced copy of the series debut of "The Middle," Heaton's new comedy, which debuts tonight on ABC. But the show is already being compared, less than favorably, with ABC's "Modern Family," which debuted last week to lots of buzz.

I caught up with a new fall sit-com last week called The Middle, starring Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond fame. The show has nothing specifically to do with special needs, but a scene in the most recent episode made me laugh with recognition. Heaton's harried mom, torn between responsibilities to kids and work and elderly relatives, is granted fifteen minutes of alone time by a co-worker who promises to cover for her while she...

Two TV seasons ago, TV veterans Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier," "Cheers") and Patricia Heaton ("Everybody Loves Raymond") teamed up for the highly forgettable Fox sitcom "Back to You" - proof positive that even a history on long-running and award-winning shows is no guarantee for future success. Now Miss Heaton and Mr. Grammer are back again in separate ABC comedies premiering Wednesday night. In general, they're still playing the same characters...

This season, Patricia Heaton follows Kelsey Grammer in her own sitcom, "The Middle," on ABC. Not only is Heaton better suited to this show from DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler, the sitcom itself is stronger.

While his onetime co-star Patricia Heaton basks in the warm reviews for "The Middle," Kelsey Grammer got the cold shoulder from TV critics for his new sitcom, "Hank." Grammer plays the title character, a corporate exec who loses his job and is forced to move to his wife's small hometown to raise their two children. "Hank" was faulted by many reviewers for clumsily reworking the "Frasier" formula. "Frasier" is certainly a tough act to follow as...

Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton, who last worked together on the failed Fox sitcom, "Back to You," now work on separate new comedies that run back-to-back on ABC.
In "Hank" (ABC, 8 p.m.) Grammer absolutely cannot lose his patrician demeanor he so well honed as "Frasier" portraying a big city CEO who has lost his job, forcing his family to move into a small Virginia town in a home that will seem perfectly adequate or even kind of big for...
