Several rookie shows with Northeast Ohio connections received nominations for People's Choice awards. They include NBC's "Community," CBS' "Three Rivers" and ABC's "The Middle," "Modern Family" and "FlashForward."  

I wasn't really prepared to like The Middle. I had no expectations, really, because aside from knowing that it was Patricia Heaton's latest sitcom, there had been very little scuttlebutt about it. So, when I tuned in, I expected the typical Patty Heaton I had seen for years on Everybody Loves Raymond or the upscale version I'd watched on Back to You. So I was jazzed to receive an advanced copy of the series debut of "The Middle," Heaton's new comedy, which debuts tonight on ABC. But the show is already being compared, less than favorably, with ABC's "Modern Family," which debuted last week to lots of buzz.

This season, Patricia Heaton follows Kelsey Grammer in her own sitcom, "The Middle," on ABC. Not only is Heaton better suited to this show from DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler, the sitcom itself is stronger.
