There's a cute skit called Gypsy playing the St. James theatre right now with a catchy little score written by two veritable unknowns; Stephen Sondheim (most recognized by musical theatre aficionados, of course, for his acting turn in the independent queer teen semi-cult movie musical Camp and his recent voiceover work on TV's The Simpsons ) and Jule Styne (recognized for neither the independent queer teen semi-cult movie musical Camp nor TV's The Simpsons .) Gypsy is directed by its librettist, Arthur Laurents , and stars newcomer Patti LuPone (known best by Broadway's biggest fans as the lady who sang the theme song to ... Read Full Story

Gypsy! I’ve been trying to get to this show since it opened last spring. I’m a sucker for buzz, so when critics started touting Patti LuPone’s turn as Momma Rose as the performance of her career, I was itching to see it. The Tony Awards only increased my longing when LuPone and cast members Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti all took home trophies- Gypsy was not to be missed. Patti LuPone (via last.fm ) I could spend the next hour talking about Patti Lupone ’s incredible history on the Broadway musical stage. We’d start with her recent run starring in Gypsy, for which she won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award , and which drew no less than Stephen Sondheim himself on closing night. I’d have to mention Sweeney Todd, of course, and Evita. And that she is currently touring the country with Mandy Patinkin in a two-act concert. But then I couldn’t fit in the real reason for her joining me this morning: Patti Lupone is on “ 30 Rock ... Read Full Story

Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. I'm sure many of us didn't get a very good night's sleep after the last night brought us the two-hour premiere of Lost, new installments of Damages and Top Chef, and the launch of FOX's Lie to Me. Since when did Wednesday become the go-to night for top-notch television programming? George Clooney is filming scenes this week on NBC's ER, where he will reprise his role as Dr. Doug Ross. He last appeared on the series in an uncredited cameo in 2000. No word on whether he'll bring Ross' Caesar cut with him. (Entertainment Tonight) Season Two ... Read Full Story

Audience members at the second-to-last performance of Gypsy on Saturday night were there to see pure Patti LuPone and, to their delight, they got it. A few bars into the musical's thunderous final number, "Rose's Turn," an enraged LuPone stopped the entire show for five minutes to excoriate an audience member for using flash photography. She wouldn't resume the number until the man was ejected, at which point she began with aplomb and a wild round of applause. It was, for this fan at least, an experience both terrifying and awesome.
