What Ever Happened to Baby June?

There's a cute skit called Gypsy playing the St. James theatre right now with a catchy little score written by two veritable unknowns; Stephen Sondheim (most recognized by musical theatre aficionados, of course, for his acting turn in the independent queer teen semi-cult movie musical Camp and his recent voiceover work on TV's The Simpsons ) and Jule Styne (recognized for neither the independent queer teen semi-cult movie musical Camp nor TV's The Simpsons .) Gypsy is directed by its... Read Full Story

Gypsy

From:  citylitnyc.com
Gypsy!  I’ve been trying to get to this show since it opened last spring. I’m a sucker for buzz, so when critics started touting Patti LuPone’s turn as Momma Rose as the performance of her career, I was itching to see it. The Tony Awards only increased my longing when LuPone and cast members Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti all took home trophies- Gypsy was not to be missed. My parents and I caught the show last week, and miraculously, Ms LuPone was indeed there! Unfortunately, Laura... Read Full Story

Patti Lupone, 30 ROCK NBC-TV guest star: Mr. Media Audio Interview

From:  mrmedia.com
Patti LuPone (via last.fm ) I could spend the next hour talking about Patti Lupone ’s incredible history on the Broadway musical stage. We’d start with her recent run starring in Gypsy, for which she won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award , and which drew no less than Stephen Sondheim himself on closing night. I’d have to mention Sweeney Todd, of course, and Evita. And that she is currently touring the country with Mandy Patinkin in a two-act concert. But then I couldn’t fit in the real... Read Full Story

Channel Surfing: Clooney Returns to "ER," Gondry Directs "Conchords," Patti LuPone Heads to "30 Rock," and More

Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. I'm sure many of us didn't get a very good night's sleep after the last night brought us the two-hour premiere of Lost, new installments of Damages and Top Chef, and the launch of FOX's Lie to Me. Since when did Wednesday become the go-to night for top-notch television programming? George Clooney is filming scenes this week on NBC's ER, where he will reprise his role as Dr. Doug Ross. He last appeared on the series in an uncredited cameo... Read Full Story

Patti LuPone Gives Em Hell on the Way Out

From:  hotfeeder.com
Audience members at the second-to-last performance of Gypsy on Saturday night were there to see pure Patti LuPone and, to their delight, they got it. A few bars into the musical's thunderous final number, "Rose's Turn," an enraged LuPone stopped the entire show for five minutes to excoriate an audience member for using flash photography. She wouldn't resume the number until the man was ejected, at which point she began with aplomb and a wild round of applause. It was, for this fan at least... Read Full Story

Gypsy

Moved to tears, I sit with my eyes unable to blink in fear of missing even a second of the brilliance that lay before me.  The stage opens on set of an old theater house where Mama Rose has entered her girls in a talent contest.   From city to city, town to town they travel with dreams of Stardom.   Running two hours and 30 minutes, the play never once leaves you antsy.  Gypsy’s stellar cast, including Laura Benanti and Boyd Gaines, satisfies your eyes and ears.  The dynamism of Patti... We warned you, but did you listen? No.

From:  lasvegassun.com
She did it again. Broadway star Patti LuPone hadnÕt even finished lowering her arms in the iconic introduction to the song ÒDonÕt Cry For Me, ArgentinaÓ when she waved to her 10-man orchestra to stop the music. LuPone was already at the lip of the stage, chewing out some doofus in the third row, who was brave and foolish enough to be caught using an electronic gizmo during her show at the Orleans Showroom. ÒWhat were you doing?Ó LuPone demanded of her captive. ÒI promise not to be mad at you... Read Full Story
