The conversations surrounding Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier are likely to heat up as we get closer to July 1, when the no-trade clause on his contract kicks in. The two teams mentioned most when Lecavalier’s name comes up seem to be the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings. With regards to the Kings, defenceman Jack Johnson is one of the players mentioned as possibly being involved in any deal with Tampa. I had an interesting chat with Barry Smith, who is the head coach of SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL - and he said Johnson’s father, Jack Johnson Sr., contacted St. ... Read Full Story

Mike Chen's Hockey Blog Previous entry: What Would Bill Wirtz Think? by Mike Chen on 05/14/09 at 03:18 PM ET Comments (2) Oh, those wacky Tampa Bay Lightning. Oren Koules and company are lucky that there are riveting second-round series going on this week; otherwise, more people in the hockey world might have noticed his bit of public idiocy (and a bit of contempt, really) when it comes to previous Lightning GM Jay Feaster. From the Lightning’s open house ( courtesy of Raw Charge ): This is where the Cowboy moniker was earned by OK Hockey. And it showed up on Monday night during ... Read Full Story

The Tampa Bay Lightning made Rick Tocchet their full-time coach Monday, lifting the interim tag and giving him a three-year contract. The former NHL star took over in mid-November after Barry Melrose was fired. Tampa Bay went 19-33-14 under Tocchet. "Now I'm on the clock," Tocchet said. "I'm ready to go. We have some great pieces on this team. I think we have a lot of players here that can do the job. I'm excited." Hurt by injuries, the Lightning missed the playoffs for the second straight season. Tampa Bay used 50 players, including 22 defensemen. Owner Oren Koules wholeheartedly endorsed Tocchet. "It's something ... Read Full Story

It was a wild night at the St. Pete Times Forum Thursday night as the Tampa Bay rallied from a pair of two goal deficits and defeated the Minnesota Wild in a shoot out, 4-3. The victory was the first shoot out win of the season for Tampa Bay, which had failed to score on 14 shoot out attempts before Vincent Lecavalier and Steven Stamkos went 2-for-2 on the night. It was also the third victory for Tampa Bay after a four day layoff. In a strange...

The Lightning's top draft pick, defenseman Victor Hedman, has been sensational all season. Teamed with fellow Swede Mattais Ohlund, the hulking Hedman leads all NHL rookies in ice time.  He is also averaging 24 minutes a game, is a plus one in plus/minus, and has four points. The 18 year old learned a tough lesson Thursday night in Ottawa, when notorious cheap shot artist Chris Neil took a run at him behind the Lightning goal in Tampa Bay's 3...

The Tampa Bay Lightning finally earned their first road victory of 2009, and they did it in overtime— a double whammy that killed two issues plaguing the team this year. The only better outcome for the Bolts would have been if they could have won it in the shootout, which would have eliminated all three albatrosses at once. Tampa Bay entered the game 0-4-1 in road games this season, a stark contrast from their dominant play on home ice (4-0-3...
