Instead of having to fight through rush hour traffic to make it to work, Ruthia Yi '07 travels down a dirt road to her "office," a small village in Togo that lacks running water and electricity. As a Peace Corps volunteer, Yi teaches residents about soil conservation methods and the pressing need for reforestation. D. Addis-Simonson ( Nashua ) - Duncan Simonson of Nashua left on August 11, 2008 to begin his Peace Corps service in Panama. He joined 35 other Peace Corps volunteers who will be doing community economic development and environmental service development with indigenous peoples in Panama. He will be building composting latrines and developing safe water supplies in the community he will reside in for the next 24 months. Volunteers train for three months with extensive cultural immersion before being placed at a site. They exchanged email addresses and she graciously offered to put him in touch with Jeremiah Johnson, whose profile in the magazine caught his eye. The 25-year-old Johnson served for 16 months as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Ukraine where he taught English and AIDS prevention.
