GOL Flies to Peru
Just in time for our launch of Peru coverage, GOL - the discount airline in Brazil - this week launched its international service from Brazil to Peru. Daily flights will depart Rio de Janeiro's Galeão airport to Lima with a stopover in São Paulo.
GOL's expansion comes on the heels of news that Varig, Brazil's troubled flagship airline, was permanently stripped of 119 of its domestic flights. Varig, one the largest Latin American carriers, filed for bankruptcy in 2005 and has been struggling ever since. Problems began with the decline of Brazil's economy in the 80's and 90's. When the government declared a foreign debt moratorium, Varig was forced to finance its new aircraft purchases in Japanese Yen, which cost it dearly a few years later in the face of the Yen's appreciation. To make matters worse, a freeze on airline ticket prices was imposed in the late 80's (which lasted 5 years). The airline was bought by a consortium of investors in June 2006, who hoped to grow the airline's presence from its current 10 planes in operation.
In the meantime GOL has continued its expansion both domestically in Brazil and internationally with routes to Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and now Peru.
