I don't have road rage. I don't get THAT mad while driving. What would be the point? Of course, that doesn't mean that I don't get irritated enough to let slip a few bad words when other people's driving irritates me. Last week, two cars coming in the opposite direction passed a garbage truck in front of them - and they didn't care that they almost caused a head-on collision (with us!). That elicited more than just a few bad words from me (think finger gestures). They deserved it! Other things that irritate me: Tailgating. Whether it is the car behind me on my ... Read Full Story

I've touched on some of these things before, but thought it was about time to make one ultimate list of the things that bother me most on the roads. Anything you want to add, I'm always looking to expand my list. Your kid was student of the month at some ... Read Full Story

My Pet Peeves by Ron LeGrand As I go through life and deal with hundreds of people each month, sometimes it amazes me how some folks get to be adults and not get put out of their misery by some short tempered idiot who shoots first and thinks later. I rarely get mad or lose my temper, not even while I’m raising a 16 year old granddaughter going on 21 who thinks money is a right when one gets born, to be used up at will with a never ending supply and work is what you get for punishment if you don’t agree with ... Dogs -Yeah, I said it. I DON'T LIKE DOGS! Wanna fight about it? Dogs scare me. I would rather face a man in a fight than a dog. Dog's can't be reasoned with. They're primal and you're fooling yourself if you think different. Pit bull owners, I'm especially talking to you. If you're a 100 pound woman walking a pit bull who you think could never hurt a fly, you're an idiot and you deserve to go to prison when that man eater gets loose and kills someone. Rachael Ray -Nobody's that nice Rachel Ray. You may have everyone else fooled, but I'm not ... Read Full Story

Remember that scene in “Reality Bites” in which Winona Ryder’s character is asked on the spot to define irony…but she can’t? I was remembering that over the weekend as my date cited instance after instance that he deemed “ironic.” The thing is, they weren’t. They were coincidental, or just unlucky. And it drove me nuts! I’m not the type to pick apart an Alanis Morrissette song, but I don’t like it when people use words they don’t understand. And as I listened to him talk, I realized that a) he was boring, and b) that I couldn’t take much more. Petty? Perhaps. But aren’t ... Read Full Story
This week, we invited the dining public and the servers who wait on them to rant (or rave) online. It was like you'd been muzzled for centuries. Service and certainly the food have improved over the years in this city, especially in the serious ...

We'll be making a list every Tuesday in the print edition of The Province. It might have 23 items, it might have three. We don't like to pigeonhole ourselves. This week's list might have a few more editions in the future. It's a list of our pet peeves in sports: Icing the puck while shorthanded Why is this allowed? A team gets penalized for breaking a rule, but it's allowed to break another one while it's being penalized? It's like being...

One of my biggest pet peeves is people who sanctimoniously deride all "political correctness" as just people being overly-sensitive.  What is so wrong with taking a few minutes to think about the words you choose to use?  I used to use the term "gypped" all the time until I really thought about its origin.  Once I realized the term refered to gypsies and perpetuated a very unflattering stereotype of that culture, I made a conscious effort to...

To celebrate my birthday, I invited everyone I know to join me for happy hour. I took the time to make and send a special invite. However, I was shocked by how many friends didn't read it. One person thought the party was the day I sent the invite, another went to the wrong bar, and two people showed up four hours after the specified time. Not reading an invitation is my biggest party planning pet peeve. I made it a point to provide all the...
