Peter Davi, a long-time big wave surfer, died while surfing in early December 2007.  His death came only a month before the Mavericks Surf Contest , which has risen in popularity and is the premier surfing event for big wave riders around the world.  Jeff Clark, the founder of the Mavericks surf contest, surfed Mavericks alone for 15 years before sharing his secret with close friends — including Davi. This was the report that got released immediately after Peter Davi died in early December 2007: A surfer was battered to death trying to ride huge waves that sprang up off the California coast. Peter Davi, of Monterey, lost his board and was attempting to swim to shore, but never made it, witnesses said.
