During the Mavericks Big Wave Contest in early January 2008, many in the surfing community remembered Peter Davi and mourned his passing.

A surfer was battered to death trying to ride huge waves that sprang up off the California coast.
Peter Davi, of Monterey, lost his board and was attempting to swim to shore, but never made it, witnesses said.
Friends of 45-year-old Mr Davi lost sight of him and later found him floating in the water unconscious.
