The chief executive of Craigslist has denied the website offers sex-related advertising.
In the wake of the murder of Julissa Brisman, a 26-year-old masseuse who met her alleged killer after posting an ad on the site, Jim Buckmaster said offers to exchange sexual favors for money are "strictly prohibited" and removed.
"I would not describe any section of our site as 'sex related,'" Buckmaster wrote in an email response to the Boston Globe.
Connecticut Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, has called on Craigslist to take tougher actions to stamp out pornography, prostitution and child trafficking in its online ads.
While Buckmaster admitted the website offered an "erotic services" section, he added it was not designed to offer more than "legitimate escort services, sensual massage, exotic dancers, etc.".
In a series of emailed replies to the Globe, he also defended the website's visitors, saying a majority use it to find used furniture, apartments for rent or various items for sale.
Job listings get the most traffic per listing "by an enormous margin" he added, and the housing section is "extremely heavily used as well."
"Roughly one percent of ads posted on CL are in the 'erotic services' section," Buckmaster wrote.
