Coghlan edged Philadelphia Phillies pitcher J.A. Happ, receiving 17 first-place votes and 105 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Happ, the only player picked on all 32 ballots, had 10 first-place votes and 94 points. When it comes to National League Championships, the Philadelphia Phillies are no strangers. More than just team champs, the Philadelphia Phillies second basement Chase Utley recently won the National League Silver Slugger Award for the fourth time. Each of the last four seasons since 2009, Utley, 30, has taken home this much-deserved recognition. Utley is in line behind Ryne Sandberg, who took home the award five years in a row, and Mike Schmidt who won it a total of six times (not consecutively). Utley's 2009 runs, on-base percentage, slugging percent and extra-base hits put him ahead as leader of the pack for all National ... Read Full Story

That travel team back in Virginia a decade ago must have played great defense on the left side of the infield. Ryan Zimmerman succeeded boyhood friend David Wright as the National League's Gold Glove third baseman on Wednesday. In high school, when Zimmerman was a shortstop, the two played together on a youth team. "Hopefully if we're lucky enough to continue doing what we're doing, this will be a yearly thing," Zimmerman said. "It's fun for us." A college teammate from the University of Virginia, Arizona's Mark Reynolds, is competing with Zimmerman for a Silver Slugger award, to be announced Thursday. "We all push ... Read Full Story

FoxSports is reporting that the Phillies are the “favorite” to land 3B Mark DeRosa, and that they are looking to spend around “$4-$6 million” a year on Pedro Feliz’s replacement. I’m torn on DeRosa, here are some positives and negatives of signing him, and you can tell me how I should feel.. He is upgrade offensively over Feliz. Without getting too in-depth, his OPS over the last 3 seasons is a very solid .800, while Feliz’ is .702. DeRosa crushes lefites, with a .909 OPS against them the last 2 years. This would have been helpful in the World Series, where we clearly needed ... Read Full Story

Chase Utley ripped a no-doubt-about-it shot to right, put his head down and ran around the bases so quickly he nearly passed Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino. Even in the World Series, Utley doesn't pause to admire his homers. He's had plenty of opportunities, too, connecting five times to tie Reggie Jackson's record set in 1977 with the Yankees. Another big swing from Utley got the Philadelphia Phillies started, and they broke out of their hitting funk in an 8-6 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 5 on Monday night. Utley hit a three-run shot off A.J. Burnett in the first inning ... Read Full Story

A.J. Burnett started walking briskly off the mound before manager Joe Girardi even got there. The erratic right-hander already was finished — and he knew it. With a chance to pitch the New York Yankees to their first World Series championship in nine years, Burnett was a major bust in Game 5 on Monday night. He gave up a three-run homer before retiring a hitter, and was chased with nobody out in the third inning. After battering Burnett, the Philadelphia Phillies held on for an 8-6 victory that cut their deficit to 3-2 and sent the Series back to New York for Game 6 ... Read Full Story

The National League MVP will be announced this week, and it will undoubtedly be handed to Albert Pujols. With this year's race all but locked up, I wanted to take a look at a player who I consider to be the front-runner for MVP in 2010.  At 25 years old, Matt Kemp has already put up impressive numbers that rank up there with some of the elite names in baseball history.  He is just one of 17 outfielders in the integration era—a list that...

Reporting from Chicago - Commissioner Bud Selig said the Dodgers were “in good hands” for now but refused to offer assurances to fans worried that the McCourt divorce saga could compromise the future of the club. Baseball’s owners held their quarterly meetings here today, with Jamie McCourt absent from sessions she had attended regularly. A lot of the talk around the Phillies right now is regarding who will replace Pedro Feliz as third baseman, after the team declined their $5.5 million option to bring him back next season. The team will test the free-agent market but don’t be surprised if there is no new third baseman after all. Feliz may just be the best option. Names like Adrian Beltre, Chone Figgins, Mark DeRosa, Joe Crede, Troy Glaus, Melvin Mora, Placido Polanco, and even...
