Have you ever stared out into a parking lot and watched all of the cars parked there? It doesn’t matter where, but its more spectacular when you are at a mall or large complex, where almost every spot is filled. Indifferent eyes will pass over the lines of cars, maybe looking at colors or models, but never really counting.

Today, I was in the car and watching the numerous cars pass us and then when we parked, I looked out at more cars parked around us. A sudden and disturbing thought hit me out of no where.

The people. The sheer number of people.

In cars, walking, jogging, in shops, on the sidewalk–they’re everywhere. In just a space of a few dozen miles in the suburbs of Philadelphia, there were an uncountable number of people just there.

…and it occurred to me at the same time, my God, there are more of them out there.

Just imagine–literally 6 billion humans live on this earth and more than 5,999,999,955+/- of them are people you will never meet or even know exist other than in statistics. They breathe the same way you do, eat the same, sleep and dream the same…have families like you, feel like you do, cry, scream and feel fear like you do. But they’re alien. You see a stranger and subconsciously label them “outsider.” Self-alienation is so common to us, we scarcely recognize it. If you try to reach other to people you don’t know, they immediately think you’re trying to do them harm in some subtle way. We, inside our families and close knit ties, draw a safety net to not go out to far to meet others. We don’t care for those 5,999,999,955+/- people. But we depend on them so dearly as members of the same species.

How weird is that?
