 "Great Printer - I would recommend" 2009-10-18
By R. Klinger (Fargo, ND)
I've had the printer for about two weeks now. 100% satisfied so far. Easy setup, all functions work well, very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone. I have a number of HP multi functions over the years and this is their best product yet in my opinion. We'll see the how the ink lasts.

"Setting this up is a NIGHTMARE!" 2009-10-16
By Chocolate (Southern MD)
I spent 3 1/2 hrs working with the set up documents provided trying to get the printer working. After many attempts to solve the problem of, "Alignment failed" I spent an additional 1 1/2 hrs with HP tech support on the phone. Total time, 5 hrs and HP is shipping me new printer heads. Poor quality machine!

"Love it and only one snag on setup!" 2009-10-16
By Nutzy7 (San Diego, CA)
This HP 8500 Wireless All-In-One printer is fantastic! I especially enjoy the scan feature as it provides options for duplex scanning, adding/deleting pages, and several output types. I don't use this printer for photos much, but the ones I have printed came out beautifully. The noise factor is really my only negative on this model. Set up was easy for the most part except that the printer would not recognize my wireless network. It picked up every other wireless network in the neighborhood but mine. I had to call HP to find out that holding the power button down for several seconds will reset the printer and then a new search for my network worked. HP support was great and they even stayed on the phone through the rest of setup to make sure I didn't run into any other problems. I'm very satisfied with this all in one printer.

 "HP 8500 wireless printheads don't work" 2009-10-16
By Ed J. Gray
HP 8500 wireless shipment arrived and setup was straightforward but the printheads are nonfunctioning. HP tech support is sending new printheads (been waiting three weeks now) and if printheads don't work then I get to send the printer to them for replacement. I'm hoping to be able to have a working printer 60 days after ordering it.

"The majority of the cost is due to the wireless - make sure you need it." 2009-10-15
By Pen Name (Fairbanks, Alaska)
I've never used a wireless printer before, but have always hated having to have my printer right next to my desktop computer, since it takes up so much room. The HP Officejet Pro 8500 solves that problem by allowing me to move my printer (which I seldom use) into an entirely different room. The space savings and lack of clutter alone is almost worth the price. I tried this in two different settings: as a home printer and an office printer. As a home printer, it works very well. It is an All in One device, so it handles printing, copying, and scanning. Setup was very quick and I had it unboxed and configured within 15 minutes. I am not very proficient with wireless devices, but the wireless configuration was simple to set up and not nearly as confusing as some other devices I've seen in the past. I've always had bad luck with HP All in Ones, and always preferred a separate scanner, but it looks like they've improved on their technology in the last few years. The scanner is very fast and the quality is nice (19200 dpi). My one real problem with it is the scanning software, which is horrible and tremendously bloated. I was able to eventually configure it so that only the necessary drivers were installed, but the average user may find that difficult.

The printer and copier functions were moderately impressive. It handles duplex printing and copying at a quick 34 ppm. The ink cartridges are separated so you don't have to worry about replacing all of the cartridges because you happen to print a lot of yellow and use that up quickly. This is a big plus. The printer also has a full color LCD touch screen on it which worked very well, and didn't come off like a gimmick like a lot of touch screens on computer peripherals nowadays. My main concern was that the quality of the printing was not what I would expect from a $500 printer. It just can't hold up in quality to a laser printer and there was a noticeable difference. I realize it's not marketed as a laser printer, but in an office environment when I need to print things to send to clients, I would much rather prefer a color laser printer.

Overall, the HP8500 is an okay printer as long as you're buying it for the right reasons. It's decent as a home printer where you need the wireless functionality (that is mainly what you are paying for with this). If you have no use of a wireless printer, or you want something that provides better quality, I would highly recommend looking elsewhere and maybe getting a color laser.
