"Any Colour You Like" North Topsail Beach, NC - July 2009 (Click to embiggen)  Hosted by Written Inc. I may get an argument here about whether or not this light is "orange" or "golden". This is where being a guy comes in handy though because even though I scored off the chart on the color discrimination test, because I'm a guy I'm not expected to understand the subtle variations between orange and sienna and tangerine (and it's probably true that I couldn't call them by their given names). Which in this case works out well for me because I can respond to any suggestion ... Read Full Story

"Duckling Schmuckling" Greensboro NC - October 2009 (Click to embiggen)  Hosted by Written Inc. Okay so here's the thing. Carmi hinted that the theme for this week would be "Orange" yesterday like he does most every Tuesday, but it didn't sound finalized, so I held off. But I sniffed around the archives just in case and realized that no fewer than three of the photo themes I participate in regularly have used "Orange" as a theme. Which ought to mean I have a bunch of left over shots right? Well okay, yeah I do, but they're pretty redundant in a lot of cases. Still, ... Read Full Story

"They just find the best stuff!" Raleigh, NC - November 2009 (Click to embiggen) I'm hijacking Dad's blog for a minute, 'cause he won't let me have my own (don't know why, he's got a spare computer I could use after all). Anyway, if you remember my birthday last year you remember that yummy smelling box that arrived a few days later. Well it took a little while to figure out where it came from, but it wasn't hard to figure out that it smelled really gooood . Well this year, not only did the box smell good, it was specially made for me! ... Read Full Story

"Speed Checked By Radar, Enforced by Natural Selection" Somewhere on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC - February 2001 (Click to embiggen)  Hosted by Written Inc. If the unthinkable should ever occur and I get bored with the North Carolina beaches, a little further from me in the other direction are the North Carolina mountains. Which include a substantial portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway is a nearly 500-mile strip running along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and Virginia that will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2010. I canot possibly tell you about all the points of ... Read Full Story

"Public Beach Access" North Topsail Beach, NC - July 2009 (Click to embiggen)  Hosted by Written Inc. When I was a kid, they used to call North Carolina "Variety Vacationland" because of its... variety of vacation destinations. I don't think we put it on our license plates or anything, but it was a common phrase bandied about in the media. Back then though, the majority of tourists were homegrown -- or regional at least. In more recent years, more folks have discovered the place which is good and bad. Good in that it brings in additional revenue and most of it in areas of ... Read Full Story

The word Cotogna (pronounced cotonia) translates as quince, though it's not quite that easy in Italian markets. In Tuscany quinces of the sort pictured here can be labeled either Pera Cotogna or Mela Cotogna (Pear-Quince & Apple-Quince, respectively), and you may find one term used in one stand at a market, and the other at another. To further confuse matters, in Tuscany the word Cotogna is also applied to an end-of-season clingstone peach...
