Botox is a neurotoxin, which basically means that it works to block nerve transmission at the junction between nerve and muscle. It works well for dynamic wrinkles of the face, or areas where laugh lines/wrinkles are caused by facial expression.
Botox is bottled in a powder form in 100 units and is constitututed, or mixed prior to use by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. It is then injected into the area of wrinklings, such as the crow's feet, laugh lines, forehead, and area between the eyebrows.
Within 3 to 5 days, the wrinkles begin to disappear, as the body is no longer able to wrinkle those areas with facial movement. It should not create a frozen look, but rather, a look that is more akin to a more youthful person.
Within 4 to 5 months, the Botox will disappear and the wrinkles begin to edge in. At that time, the patient should schedule another appointment for more Botox.
