NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Medicaid pharmacy costs for the blood-thinning drug Plavix jumped at around the same time the drug's maker started advertising it to consumers -- even though the number of people prescribed the drug didn't change, new research shows. In the current issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, Dr. Michael R. Law of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and colleagues note that spending by government insurers for prescription drugs rose about 15 percent each year between 1994 and 2004. There's been an assumption that advertising drugs to consumers helps drive up prescription drug costs but there's little evidence ... Read Full Story
CHICAGO (Reuters) - When consumer advertising began for the popular blood-thinner Plavix, Medicaid insurance programs for the poor and disabled spent millions more on the drug, even though the ads did not tempt doctors to write more prescriptions, researchers reported on Monday. They said the study suggested that while ads might not directly increase the number of prescriptions, they still affect the cost of publicly funded healthcare because drugmakers appear to build the cost of the ads into their prices. "Consequently, payers and policymakers should appropriately still be concerned about direct-to-consumer advertising for publicly funded reimbursement programs such as Medicare and Medicaid," Michael Law ... Patients should avoid using the stomach acid reducer Prilosec/Prilosec OTC (omeprazole) with the anti-clotting drug Plavix (clopidogrel), according to a warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). New data suggest that when patients take both Prilosec and Plavix, Plavix's ability to block platelet aggregation (anti-clotting effect) may be reduced by about half. "Both of these drugs, when used properly, provide significant benefits to patients," said Mary Ross Southworth, Pharmaceutical Director of the Division of Cardiovascular and Renal Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "However, patients at risk for heart attacks or strokes who use Plavix to prevent platelet aggregation ... Read Full Story
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Common heartburn pills Prilosec and Nexium cut the blood-thinning effect of Sanofi-Aventis SA's and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co's heart drug Plavix, U.S. officials warned on Tuesday. The stomach drugs inhibit a key enzyme and reduce by almost half the anti-clotting effect of Plavix, which is taken by millions of people to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke, the Food and Drug Administration said. Plavix is the world's second-biggest-selling medicine, with global sales of around $9 billion. The U.S. label for Plavix, known also as clopidogrel, is now being updated with new warnings on the use of AstraZeneca Plc's Prilosec and ... Read Full Story

AstraZeneca PLC said Thursday it has applied to U.S. regulators to market its blood clot preventer Brilinta, a potential new big seller for the company. AstraZeneca submitted a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Brilinta, also known as ticagrelor. Analysts have forecast that Brilinta could reap billions of dollars each year for AstraZeneca, which has already applied to European regulators for permission to sell the drug. AstraZeneca sponsored research revealed in August that the use of Brilinta reduced patients' chances of dying by 20 percent, compared with Plavix, the world's No. 2 selling medication made by Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers ... Indications

Plavix is indicated for:

* Prevention of vascular ischaemic events in patients with symptomatic atherosclerosis
* Acute coronary syndrome without ST-segment elevation, along with aspirin

It is also used, along with aspirin, for the prevention of thromboembolism after placement of intracoronary stent.

Most consensus-based therapeutic guidelines recommend the use of Plavix, over aspirin, in patients requiring antiplatelet therapy but with a history of gastric ulceration, as inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins by aspirin can exacerbate this condition. A recent study has shown that in patients with healed aspirin-induced ulcers, however, patients receiving aspirin plus the proton pump inhibitor esomeprazole had a lower incidence of recurrent ulcer bleeding than patients receiving clopidogrel.

Dosage forms

Plavix is marketed as clopidogrel bisulfate, most commonly under the trade name Plavix, as 75 mg oral tablets.

Adverse effects

Serious adverse drug reactions associated with Plavix therapy include:

* Severe neutropenia
* Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
* Hemorrhage - The incidence of hemorrhage may be increased by the co-administration of aspirin.
* Erectile Dyfunction
