How I Write A Poem by Greenwolfe 1962

I  do  not  go  to  my  poems  ,  they  come  to  me  .  When  they  do  come  to  me  ,  it  is  in  one  of  two  ways  . Iimages  or  ideas  and  concepts  .  When  they  come  to  me  as  images  ,  it  is  in the  form  of  a  dream  or  a  picture  of  some  kind  that  sticks  in  my  mind  and  gives  rise  to  a  thought  or  an  imaginary  sequence  of  events  that  may  have  occurred  either  before  or  after  I saw  it  in  my  dream  or  pictured  it  as  it  happened  .  The  fun  part  of  creating  this  way  ,  is  the  fact  that  you  have  complete  and  total  freedom  in  your  imagination  to  tell  any  story  you  wish  to  tell  .  I  much  prefer  to  have  my  poems  come  this  way  .  With   respect   to  ideas  or  concepts  ;  it  is  much  more  difficult  to  make  use  of  those  because  in  a  sense  you  wind  up  trying  to  create  your  own  visual  images  of  what  you  want  to  say .  This  is  the  hardest  thing  to  do  in  poetry  in  my view  .   That is because you are asking  your  mind  to  remained  focused  on  the  point  you  are  making  while  at  the  same  time  it  has  to execute  the  pattern  or  structure you  are  following  .  Thank   God  ,  the  execution  of  structure  is  easy  for  me  .  It  is  because  this  necessary  part  of  writing  is  so  easy  ,  that  the  writing  of  rhythm  and  rhyme  causes  me  no  difficulty  .  I  do  not  struggle  technically  with  the  construction  of  a  poem  .  It  is  the  strongest part  of  what  I  do  and  may  be  the  weakest  of  what  others  do  . Everyone can express themselves  fairly  well  .  It  is  making  the  expression  attractive  to  the  reader  that  is  what  most writers  lack  in  the  area  of  poetry  .  I  wish  there  was  an  easy  tip  to  give  to  everyone  to  make  them  better  at  this , but  it  really  boils  down  to  the  degree  to  which  the  writer  is  cares about  the  reader  .  If  the  writer  cares  ,  they  can  improve  greatly  .  If  they  don't  ,  they  never will  .
