Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell says he has the best interest of polar bears at heart, but he doesn't intend to let the federal government's expanded protection for bears get in the way of the state's continued prosperity. Like his predecessor, Sarah Palin, the governor is suing the federal government to overturn the listing of the iconic symbol of the Arctic as a threatened species, a move made last year that he believes could threaten Alaska's lifeblood: petroleum development. "Currently some are attempting to improperly use the Endangered Species Act to shut down resource development," Parnell says. "I'm not going to let this happen on ... Read Full Story

By Steve Toub As part of our continuing series examining the impacts of climate change on endangered species, we’ll now address how the rapid, disruptive climate change impacts the Edith’s checkerspot butterfly. The butterfly is so sensitive to climate that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) study on the Ecological Impacts of Climate Change says it acts as an “early warning indicator of climate change in North America.” Bay checkerspot butterfly – T.W.Davies (c) California Academy of Sciences Two subspecies of the Edith’s checkerspot butterfly are listed under the Endangered Species Act, the Bay checkerspot in the San Francisco Bay area, which was listed ... The brown pelican, pushed to the edge of extinction in the 1970s by pesticide use, habitat loss and hunting, was Wednesday taken off the endangered species list, US Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said. "We can celebrate an extraordinary accomplishment: the brown pelican is endangered no more," Salazar said. "It has taken 36 years, the banning of DDT and a lot of work by the US government, the states, conservation organizations, dedicated citizens and partners, but today we can say that the brown pelican is back," Salazar told a telephone news conference held simultaneously in Washington and Louisiana. The brown pelican was listed ... Read Full Story

Canada and Greenland agreed on a series of measures aimed at protecting shared populations of polar bears which roam between the Nunavut territory and the huge arctic island, officials said. Canada's Environment Minister Jim Prentice made the announcement during a conference call from Kangerluusuaq, Greenland, where he signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Friday with Greenland's Minister of Fisheries, Hunting and Agriculture, Ane Hansen and Prentice's Nunavut territory counterpart Daniel Shewchuk. The deal proposes the creation of a joint committee that would recommend a total allowable -- and sustainable -- annual polar bear harvest and a fair division of the harvest. Hunting polar bears ... Polar bears are some of the most high-profile victims of global warming. They’re irresistibly cute, and author Richard Ellis says they’ll disappear from the wild within a hundred years as irreversible warming destroys the polar ice caps. Ellis talks to host Guy Raz about his new book, On Thin Ice: The Changing World of the Polar Bear.

I know PETA is trying to keep animals out of captivity but arent the polar bears like endangered? Wouldnt this be a plus for polar bears? Giving them a better opportunity to reproduce without falling through thin ice. I dont know maybe im just crazy. TLC-BobTheBuilder

has the Mother advertising agency NO MORALS? I don't mean the fact of using polar bears falling to the ground with the background noise of a commercial jet, like was heard on 9-11. I don't mean the fact of using 9-11 FALLING MAN imagery. I don't even mean the fact of the gratuitous BLOOD AND GORE as the polar bears slam uncensored into our daily lives, much like the planes on 9-11 slammed into the World Trade Centre to usher in New World Order...

First we looked at an architect that wants to build a massive artificial mountain in the middle of Berlin. Now comes word that the St. Louis Zoo has decided to replace its polar bears with electronic replacements. Um, what? The zoo's last polar bear was euthanized after zookeepers discovered that she had cancer. The polar bear before her died after wolfing down too much plastic and cloth, and the one before her died from an infection. So...

This is what happens when your state economy is a one trick pony based on oil. Too bad the Republicans haven't weened themselves from oil and developed other parts of the economy. They're completely lacking in creativity but of course, it could also be their inability to see beyond petro-dollars from lobbyists. Because they're so limited, now they're ready to trounce over the environment to pay for their own failures.Alaska Gov. Sean...

Over 200,000 square miles (520,000 sq km) of Alaskan territory could be designated ‘critical habitat’ for polar bears, under new proposals from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. This is the largest area ever proposed for such a designation by the FWS If the land is designated as critical habitat any “destruction or adverse modification” of it will be prohibited under the Endangered Species Act. This would apply to oil and gas exploration...
