NEW YORK (RUSHPRNEWS) JULY 9, 2008 -Guess what the Bush Administration left out when it granted “Threatened Species” protection to the polar bear? The protection! Instead of being a lifeline for polar bears, this plan abandons them to the ravages of global warming. It will NOT help save the polar bear from extinction — because it refuses to crack down on global warming polluters and will do nothing to stop Big Oil’s invasion of polar bear habitat. We must not let this decision stand. The Bush... Read Full Story
I was just reading in Newsweek about the listing of polar bears as a "threatened" species as defined by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). As the Arctic sea ice melts, as I saw last year on an expedition through the Northwest Passage with InMER.org, it's a step in the right direction - but a very small step to many environmentalists. If listed as "endangered", the ESA requires the government to preserve critical habitat and develop a recovery plan. In essence that means what is... Read Full Story
Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne (Does that sound like a porn star name, or what?) is allowing seven oil companies to get away with "incidental" damage to polar bears as they look for oil and natural gas in the Chukchi Sea off the northwest coast of Alaska This is the former governor of Idaho who said, when asked by right-wing bloviator Glenn Beck why he put polar bears on the "threatened" species list in May, "Well, I'll tell you. Unfortunately I have to follow the law." Kempthorne, in... Read Full Story
In honor of the recent decision by the U.S. Department of the Interior to add polar bears to the list of threatened species, under the Endangered Species Act, we've decided to put together some disgustingly cute pictures of polar bears. Obviously Polar Bears aren't becoming extinct because of over hunting or poaching, instead, they're one of the first animals to be recognized as becoming endangered because of global warming. Hopefully these pictures make you feel all warm and cuddly, and... Read Full Story
What has happened over the past couple of decades that has landed the mighty polar bear on the "threatened" list under the Endangered Species Act? Scientists believe that at least two-thirds of the world's polar bears will be gone within 40 years. The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed that the biggest concern for the bears’ future is the shrinking Arctic sea ice, which is quickly reducing the size of the bear’s habitat. Heightened controversy over the status of the polar bear is tied to... Read Full Story
