Joburg City INCREASING REFUSE REMOVAL TARIFFS!

In terms of the new proposed tariffs, by the City of Johannesburg – the lowest tariff has been reduced from R32,73 per month to NO CHARGE for properties valued at less than R150,000. The maximum tariff on the current tariff structure has increased from R92,64 to R120,00 per month, an increase of 29,5%. This excludes the new City Cleaning Levy of R10.00 per month.

The principle underpinning the proposed increase include improving services The City of Johannesburg is offer their customers in terms of street sweeping, clean-ups in the Inner City, illegal dumping and enforcing By-laws relating to waste and refuse.

So, this year 2008/9, the City of Joburg will be charging tariffs based on the market value of each property (using their new General Valuation Roll). The proposed monthly collection tariff and the City cleaning Levy for domestic properties are as follows:

Property Value: Monthly Tariff: City Cleaning Levy
Less than R150,000 Free n.a.
R150,001 to R300,000 R50 R10
R300,001 to R500,000 R60 R10
R500,001 to R700,000 R70 R10
R700,001 to R1,500,000 R80 R10
Greater than R1,500,000 R120 R10

From the 2009/10 financial year the City of Joburg will be introducing a City Cleaning Levy, which will be billed to all customers. This Levy is to assist the City in collecting and disposing of illegal dumping, stree sweeping, and garden sites, which can’t be recovered from waste management tariffs. The proposed City Cleaning Levy for non-domestic properties is as follows:

Property Value: City Cleaning Levy
Less than R2,000,000 R70
R2,000,001 to R5,000,000 R100
R5,000,001 to R10,000,000 R150
R10,000,001 to R30,000,000 R200
Greater than R30,000,000 R250

This is a change from the past where the City of Johannesburg based its tariffs on the erf size of your property. The City of Johannesburg has an open policy for consumers and customers to have their say for a limited period.

You can comment on these and other proposed tariffs until 30 April 2008. You can find the tariff documents at their main customer service centres or at: http://www.joburg.org.za/ , then click the residence, then Tariffs and then click on the relevant services tariff butoon
