The Podcast For Our 1/9 Show Is Up: Featuring Nikki Corvette on Gorevette and a New Andy Prieboy Single

The podcast for our 1/9 Revenge of the 80s Radio program is up and available at the bottom of this post. Leading off the second hour is our conversation with legendary Detroit Alt-Rocker Nikki Corvette, who with Amy Gore of the Gore Gore Girls formed Gorevette. This marks the second time Corvette has appeared on Revenge of the 80s; we did a full-length interview with the Detroit Punk Legend in 2008. During this week’s discussion, Nikki talks about:

  • How she and Amy Gore met and later decided to play together
  • Her thoughts on musical creativity and expanding as a performer.
  • Playing in Detroit regularly for the first time in 25 years
  • living as a musician in the Motor City and how that shaped the essence Detroit sound
  • Plans for a new album and tour

Since the band’s formation was announced late last year, I have become a fast fan of their music — a combination of both Corvette’s and Gore’s Detroit punk eras. Before the interview, we aired the Nikki and the Corvettes classic “I Want To Be Your Girlfriend.” Gorevette’s “Baby Let’s Rock” followed the conversation.

Later in the second hour, we played “I Want to Be Your Dog,” an early Iggy and the Stooges track featuring Ron Asheton on guitar. Asheton passed away earlier in the week. We surrounded “Dog” with tracks from The Damned and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were two of the many bands influenced by Iggy and the Stooges.

The first hour featured new music from Andy Prieboy as part of a series of singles he has been putting out since November 2008. He discusses his philosophy behind that and other things in his recent appearance on Revenge of the 80s. The song, “Pauper To a King” is a solemn story that laments a man who had nothing, gained everything and lost it all again. While it is clear that the character squandered all of his gains irresponsibly, one can not help but feel sympathy for him after some initial disdain thanks to Prieboy’s empathetic portrayal.

We also played classic tracks from several artists of the era including Altered Images, The Little Girls, Madness and Austraiilan singer Christie Allen.
