Pope Benedict XVI declared Pope John Paul II venerable Saturday, moving the late Polish national closer to sainthood, a Vatican spokesman says.
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told CNN Benedict signed a decree declaring John Paul II venerable and recognizing his heroic virtues.

For an 82-year-old man to have to preside over a service watched by millions is daunting enough – and, remember, Joseph Ratzinger is not a natural showman, unlike his predecessor.
