One of the things I love about the Triangle area is the cultural diversity. The area is home to folks from all over the world because of the universities and because of Research Triangle Park with it’s demand for highly skilled workers in the tech and biotech fields. In addition, the area has a long and rich history of craftsmanship and arts. Fairly recently, I’ve become fascinated with handmade pottery. This is a very rare planter with a price tag to prove it. This 1950s McCoy Pottery Plowboy Planter sold for $2,570 in September 2009. The planter is painted under glaze by Sidney Cope. Red Wing is a leader in Minnesota Pottery. Red Wing Collectors prize the salt glaze jugs. Beehive shapes and doubled handled jugs are always in demand. Production began in Red Wing, Minnesota in 1861 by John Paul, a German potter. This 8 ½ inch tall Collin Rhodes South Carolina Pottery Jug sold for $3,508 in September 2009. This jug was made in the early 1850s and it is believed by many that African-American slave women helped decorate these jugs. Why are pottery markings important? Throughout time, pottery artists have signed their work. For example, an exquisite ancient Greek vase called “Lekythos with Boar Hunt” was signed ‘Made by Xenophantos the Athenian' circa 380 B.C. Today, potters continue to mark their work. Obviously, they are important because markings tell us which line or who a piece of pottery is from. But markings can tell us much, much more....
