A lawmaker from the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday expressed fears of an attack by Ugandan rebels at Christmas, as in 2008 when more than 400 people were killed. The rebels of the "LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) have recently sent messages to the people of Niangara saying that they plan to 'celebrate' Christmas with them. Four of Uganda's main opposition parties announced Wednesday that they will field a single candidate to boost their chances of unseating President Yoweri Museveni in elections in 2011. The agreement follows a two-day meeting of the parties but the biggest opposition party, the Democratic Party, did not participate. "We are all very happy today, but the journey is just beginning," said Walter Wafula, spokesman for the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC). Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni flew economy class from London to Entebbe to shame big-spending civil servants and counter mounting corruption allegations, his spokesman said Monday. "If the president can comfortably travel in economy then we don't understand why civil servants must travel business class," Tamale Mirundi told AFP. He said Museveni's stunt was meant as a symbolic gesture to scold Ugandan civil servants who have recently been submitting increasingly extravaggant travel expense claims. BANGUI (Reuters) - Dozens of people were killed in a remote corner of Central African Republic when Ugandan rebels attacked villagers but were then ambushed by Ugandan soldiers, a witness and local media said. The killings took place last week around Djemah, 850 km (530 miles) east of the capital, Bangui, and are the latest in a wave of attacks by the Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels, a militia that roams around CAR, Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo killing and kidnapping civilians. The activist group Outrage! held a protest outside the Ugandan Embassy in London yesterday. Peter Tatchell of Outrage! reports : "The keynote speakers were gay Ugandan John Bosco and straight Ugandan human rights activist, Michael Senyonjo.
