Portugal legalizes abortion

Socialist Prime Minister Jose Socrates plans to use his majority in parliament to legalize abortion in Portugal. Portugal ran a referendum on the issue which failed due to low voter turnout,but won a strong majority of the votes. More than half the traditionally Catholic nation's 8.7 million electorate abstained from the ballot, but of those who voted, 59.3 percent voted to lift the abortion ban and 40.8 percent to keep it.
